I have received a strip of 14 computer vended stamps that I think are CVP31's, each of a different denomination, starting at $0.16 going sequentially through $0.29. I am unfamiliar with this type of postage. Did the purchaser tell the machine I want a $0.16, I want a $0.17....?

Yes! That is exactly the way it worked. You could get any denomination you wanted. They are most often collected with a 29c value as that was the one ounce first class rate at that time. But 19c post card rates are also common. Plate number coil collectors would print a bunch at one cent to get to the plate numbers. Ahhh those were wild and wacky days. LoL!
