Hi everyone.
Reading other introductions here there seems to be a common thread of people who have inherited their father's stamp collection and this has reignited their interest.
My Dad collected stamps for years with me when I was a child and continued after I left home almost 50 years ago. When he passed away, the collection came to me in a bit of a mess as he had been gathering stamps at an almost industrial level but had simply kept them in assorted envelopes. I have now retired and, with spare time on my hands I took down the box from the shelf a month ago and started to look through. I was captivated by it and am determined to get it all sorted out. I have decided to divide the collection into 3 parts:
X-series Machins
I have got to grips with colours, phosphor banding, perforations and the gravure/litho types but can someone tell me what is the difference between Type I and Type II that is giving me a headache in classifying my 10P orange-browns? I would also appreciate some guidance in how to distinguish all-over phosphor stamps with those on phosphorised paper.
I apologise if this is obvious to the greater expertise out there but I am currently on the steepest part of the learning curve and will have more queries in the coming years.
Many thanks
Paul H

I have decided to divide the collection into 3 parts:
- UK - I have managed to identify and catalogue all pre decimal stamps in the collection and have started on the decimal issues. I am now working on the X-series Machins (see below) and the early post decimalisation commemoratives. It is my intention to concentrate expansion of my collection on the UK as first priority and I am doing this concurrently with identifying and cataloguing the existing collection.
British Empire/Commonwealth - once I have got the UK issues in some semblance of order I intend to start on the Empire and Commonwealth. Expansion of the collection will be my second priority after I have got the UK straight.
Rest of the World - I do not intend to expand this but simply to get them into some sort of order. This is a low priority.
