I would assume the "current value" of the first stamp pictured would be: 400f New 250f Used 350f On Cover Would that be right? Scan from my 2001 catalog:

This is how I interpret and unless I doubt very many ever realize these kinds of values
New mint, never hinged with original gum and centered if imperforated, 4 margins
Used used, with (typically) light to moderate cancel, no thins, full perfs all around (and as above if imperf)
On Cover pristine and complete, not sure how value is affected if the original letter is included (must add some at least slight value) and somer obliterations carry a much higher value, including color of ink used
I haven't forgot I need to send you some scans!

Actually (you have to go to the front of the catalog and be able to read the French text introduction to know this), in Yvert catalogs the convention, where there are three columns, is:
First column: Mint, never Hinged (MNH) Second column: Mint, Hinged Third column: Used
The 3-column format is typically used for stamps up to 1960, after which it's just two columns, for MNH and Used.

I was going off the word mint, used and on cover. Below is a a scan of the same stamp from 2009, Maury, Ceres & Dallay, as you can see CV really vary from left to right woulf follow what @hrdortox and last column is on cover CV here are in Euros, France adopted the Euro beginning of 1/1/2002 there's currently quite a few, even some strips of 2,3 and 4 (no full sheets), but singles MNH starting in the mid US $ teens

Oh Stan, I left out some of the quote. It should be: don't hurry, don't worry - it's better to be late at heaven's gate than to get to hell on time
hrdoktorx, thanks for explaining that bit about why the cv wasn't in the key. I found the relevant info in the intro, as you said.

stainlessboctaviusThis is a perfect example why I love European cats (mostly Maury and S Gibbons) but hate understanding CVThe Franc changed value many times ( hrdoktorx)....will correct me and maybe give me an idea what Yvert&Tellier gives as CV and Stan - what Maury gives as CV - Europe is in Euros now € and GB (or UK) is in £ (pounds) - If I would be editing catalogs I would immediately give a CV in € or £ and leave the old currencies to historians who know all about the changes in valuation ......Just my thought on this 5th of July (Canada) where we continuously are briefed about the "killings" of our neighbours + friends and the BA-5 Covid variant which is going to catch up. based on the 2009 issue for Maury, I berlieve it to be in Euros, but I cannot find anything specific (maybe by 2009 it was generally accepted that everything was in Euros. I looked up the exchange rate at time of Euro adoption and it was 6.55 Francs - 1 Euro If the Y&T CV of octavius 's catalogue was still in Francs, the conversion woulf have been ~61 Euros, if so, and all catalogs are equal ... the CV of this stamp has declined.... It would be interesting to know how the current CV's are derived, and if this method has changed over the years I came to realize quickly upon re-entering the hobby a few years back that CV is at best a reference point with no real meaning almost like current home values..... I get several calls a month from realtors wanting to know if I want to sell as they have a cash buyer...willl I I consider an offer.... I have learned best way to ernd call is reply "Sure, have them offer me a million, 10 day escrow, no inspection, 60 days to move and they pay my moving costs and I'll consider it!" usually a slight bit of silence and then the call ends LOL

For a 2009 French catalog, the quotations are most definitely in Euros. But again that should be stated in the introductory text. It would also explain the rather odd numbers like 53, which when mapped back into Francs, would make a rounder 350 Francs. As to how the catalog editors come up with their CV numbers, I think this is a rather opaque artform.

Maybe, back in 2001, Y&T were selling these stamps (they do use the word "cotes" instead of "valeur"). Anyways, my only interest is in exchanging stamps with other members and the numbers quoted would form a basis for exchange. Actually, the stamp I was originally looking at is pictured below (188) - it is about the only French stamp I have of any value (270 francs). It's not really a swap but I'd let it go, if necessary, in a swap situation. That's if I ever get anybody interested in trading.
