I'm Ward Webber, messaging you from the high desert country of southeast Oregon. Cattle ranching and alfalfa (hay) production are the main industries here. We have hot summers and cold winters.
When I started collecting in fifth grade in North Vancouver, BC, I had a simple starter album. I soon found that many of the stamps in the bags of on-paper stamps that I soaked off had no spaces for them in the album. This was so frustrating that I gave up collecting until the next year, when I began to use blank, quadrille-ruled paper. I quit collecting the next year, but resumed much later and specialized in Canadian stamps. I had a fully illustrated album, so no frustrations. Years after that it was US stamps, again with full illustrations.
In a period of little money, I realized that one of the least expensive forms of collecting was worldwide. So I subscribed to a service that had worldwide album pages, with spaces for (almost) every stamp. Now I could buy inexpensive worldwide assortments, print the pages they went on, and I had a space for every stamp I had. I now have 22 used, three-ring binders with over 5,000 stamps from 207 countries, all mounted on attractive pages.
I prefer postally used stamps because they're inexpensive and don't require special mounts. Right now, I'm entering the stamps I have in the Colnect collectors web site; I'm up to Russia so far, with four more binders left. After that, whenever I get a new assortment and sort it, I can see right away which stamps I already have and add them to my duplicates album.
The information I can glean from the histories of countries shown on their stamps is fascinating, so I really enjoy studying them. If anyone would like more details on how I collect, please let me know. I'm glad to help.
