I'm looking through ebay and see a fair few of the George V and VI heads I.E SG 121. I really like these stamps but given that the CV for some really nice items are in the couple of hundreds, should I view these listings as 'dubious' given the low asking price / starting bids? I've posted two images of specific items. The first image has what looks like a VF £1 George VI and a 12Shil 6P Geroge V (For which I can't find any reference except link) And in this reference, the example has Revenue printed down both sides of the stamp. Whereas the first ebay image shows what looks like the same stamp, except with Postage and Revenue on either side. Is this fake? The second image is another GVI £1 but the colour is completely different from the first and the detail appears to be lacking. What are your thoughts?

There are numerous prints and shades of these high value Bermudas and documented varieties. I have seen an album page with 6 or more distinctly different examples of the same stamp the KG Vi. 2/- for example.
Some have high CV but others less so and condition is critically important.
So what about the lot above? Comments :
10/- GeoV. Looks like two big greasy oil stains ……… damaged . SG 92 cat £140 but with that staining just a couple of £ as space filler
12/6 GeoV. SG 93 cat £250 mint ……I am suspicious of the fading all down the right side .. looks like surface abrasion damage, and without seeing the back to check thins and how much gum still remains . £5- £10 max
The £1 GeoVI . SG 121 cat £55, £90 or £250 depends on shade and perf….but what is the black circular spot ? If it is a punched hole then it has been used Fiscally possibly for telegram.
I would not be impressed.
For the single £. The catalogue has a printing SG 121b “pale purple and black on pale red paper” which has to be very different from sG121 Which is purple and black on red. In all there are 5 shade differences listed.

What I collect: I collect world wide up to 1965 with several specialty albums added due to volume of material I have acquired. At this point I am focused on Canada and British America. I am always on the lookout for stamps and covers with postmarks from communities in Queens County, Nova Scotia. I do list various goods including stamps occasionally on eBay as hdm50

gotstamps85 all of these are genuine stamps of Bermuda. There are various shades found especially in the higher values. In the higher values one has to be aware of revenue cancels as those used for that purpose sell for far less than ones that were used for postal purposes. I do hope that eventually you will find a good used Scott or Stanley Gibbons world wide catalogue(s). They do not have to be new for these early items. The general information has stayed quite consistent. My world wide Scott is in 5 volumes and dates from 1995. Because I do not collect modern they meet my needs. PS I see Alex has just given a more detailed answer.

As vikingeck Alex mentioned there are lots of shades especially in the George VI issues. As you can see the page for these in my Scott British America specialty album is becoming overrun with them.

If those 3 high value stamps were any good the seller would be listing them individually.
As such he has some low value Bermuda stamps to get rid of and he has added 3 high value space fillers to tempt people.
Even a £19.99 or best offer you would be best advised to purchase better quality stamps. The £1 is a lovely stamp and you can get a pretty good mint copy for less than £25.
Hope this helps.

Thanks. I do have an old SG empire catalogue, but I'm still learning the ropes as it were. I.e.. What makes a very good £100 plus used stamp worth less than £10?

Answer,
condition? Postmark quality? Hidden faults, creases thins blunted perfs centring etc etc.
then the overriding factor is the market place. Unless exceptionally fine, or the buyer has money to spare, the average buyer expects to buy a decent example of most stamps for half catalogue or less. I have an in built reluctance to pay more than 1/3 , and most of what I sell I price at 20-25% because that’s what the market will bear.

If you are referring to the 1944 Empire catalogue you posted a picture of then you need to obtain a modern catalogue. Even those a few years old will not cost much from places like Ebay/Amazon.
For example in those days there was only one £1 Bermuda sg 121 listed. In the 2019 Commonwealth catalogue there are many, with a minimum of £55 mint and £75 used.
PS I've also rescued several old SG world catalogues (1929-1941) from charity shops, I do like browsing through them.

Well, I've just given a shout out to paul1 for his donation of the GB concise 2016 in the appreciation thread. So I think a more up-to-date commonwealth will be my next purchase.

Gavin ( gotstamps85 ), just for your reference.... I was able to buy a used 2014 SG British Commonwealth Catalogue 1840-1970 in very serviceable condition for £5 just last year at a local stamp auction here in Oxford, so relatively recent copies should be quite affordable if you don't feel like shelling out £80 for a new one.

All of the King George VI keyplate issues from Bermuda were printed a number of times. Many of them were used to pay the head tax of tourists leaving the island. The 12/6 and £1 values were used to pay the tax at various times. The King George V 12/6 issue was printed a number of times also. All but one of those times the words POSTAGE and REVENUE appear on the sides. There is one instance where the stamp has REVENUE on both sides, and it is extremely rare compared to the other printings. Condition is very important, so if you are serious about this lot, ask the seller to send scans of the front and back of the two high value items. Here is an ID Chart I put together showing the King George VI £1 value options based on the Stanley Gibbons Catalogue. This chart shows the front and back which is very helpful in identifying the stamps. Although there are a lot of catalog listings, there were a total of eight printings between 1937 and 1952.

I have just purchased a SG 2016 GB & commonwealth catalogue for £13. Should arrive sometime next week. So while I will still enjoy my 1944 edition, the new(er) book will be getting some serious action soon. Thanks for the advice. Also, the guide you put together is really handy.

Glad I could help. I have them for all of the Bermuda George VI Keyplate issues, so if you want to see others, just ask and I will post them here.

Here is a page from my album featuring the £1 George VI Keyplates. Hopefully you can see the variations between printing in the scan.
