My Bindertek binder came in to Staples today. I bought the 2" binder. The only other Bindertek I have to compare it to is a 3" Bindertek I bought my son quite a few years ago. So here are some observations. 1. The metal edge on the bottom of the binder is a lot smaller on the new binder than it is on the old binder. 2. On the old binder, the thickness of the cover is 3.3 mm. On the new binder the cover thickness is 2.8 mm. Overall, still better than most binders on the market, if you want a binder with ball and socket rings, and isn't made of vinyl. On another note, I think I found something REALLY similar to the Scott Binder. Wilson Jones makes a casebound piano hinge binder that looks real similar to the Scott binder, and it sells for $75.00 www.ldproducts.com/offsup-wilson-jones-wlj34444lh-ring-binder

It is not just what we collect but about what we collect such as binders.

I've always been a "stationary nerd." I've always liked premium paper, better binders. I buy notebooks to write in that have better paper. I even write with fountain pens (I LOVE my Parker 51!).
Back in 1986, I graduated high school and started college at Drexel University. Drexel made us all buy a Macintosh computer. Back in those days, we had "printer stations" where you would pop in a floppy disc and just print out your homework. All these stations used Apple ImageWriter dot matrix printers. Back them TryeType fonts didn't exist. I learned early, to get the best possible printouts, the ImageWrite driver would take whatever font you made the document in, and use a bitmap font of TWICE the size, and scale it down to print. So, if you wrote a paper in 12 point, to get the best printout, you needed to have the 24 point font installed. If you didn't the text would come out pretty jagged. Soon as I learned this, I immediately made sure all my disks had the right fonts installed. I told this to my friends and classmates and they just didn't care.
I remember looking at other people's printouts and wondering how they thought that jagged printing looked acceptable.

I have too many fountain pens! How many does one need anyway?

Probably none really - I had the best part of 1000, now all but about 20 have gone - just couldn't part with one or two Mabie Todd, Parker and Waterman - but how sad is it, since I don't now use any, but they are such things as nostalgia is made of.

I still use my Parker 51 all the time.
One thing I really don't like are fountain pens with screw caps. I've bought a few pens like that and they never get used. So that helps keep the collection in check, both in quantity and in price.

renden My Avery Heavy Duty binders came from Canada. Over the last 10 years the binder selection at the office stores has reduced. They generally just carry one or two brands and styles- the house brand and a name brand style (med duty, front view pocket, etc).. You have to shop online for anything special.

This is really frustrating for me. No store in my area caries Avery binders any more. Staples has their own brand of binders. And Office Depot has their brand. Any other brand is now special order.

Thanks for that Avery link, Jerry (Jerry B )
They have a Canadian site with those great heavy duty binders. 5 purple 1-½" binders will soon be on the way to me. And they use Canada Post. Marvellous!
Yippee!

I use the fat lighthouse binders for areas I specialize in, and 1" Staples binders for my general world collection. I can lump or split categories as the collection develops, or upgrade or downgrade them.

Hi Pete You're welcome Way back when, I bought a carton of the blue binders (12). That was to be my hedge against the binders being discontinued. Blue was for my Colombia Collection. The Green was for Ecuador and Venezuela. The red was for used collections of Colombia, Ecuador and Venezuela. I did not like the black. Jerry B

The black is OK as long as I put a label in the spine and at the front of the binder. I couldn't figure out why the binders I have been buying are such poor quality. They are Staples binders - no wonder. I'll give them to the local Community Care office here in town. They won't care!

Hi Pete
I guess Staples and Office Depot are for general use and not meant for long term use. I always get ACCO or Avery. There is an office supply on the other side of the county where I use to buy, but I don't think they are in business anymore. I prefer ACCO.

The office supply stores seem to cater to business side and their focus is on cost.

I have three of these commercial binders that are quite similar to Andy Pastuszak's. I purchased years ago at a flea market for 50¢ each. They are heavy - about kilo - and measure 30.5 cm x 28 cm. I used them as stock books.
