Hello Everyone! My name is Trey and I reside in the great state of Indiana in the US of A. I have literally never thought of stamp collecting before but my fiancée and I found two zip lock bags at an estate sale last weekend and thought it would be a great endeavor to learn about together! We picked up probably over 5,000 stamps and have no idea where to even start in researching them or finding out the value of them! Which is why I am joining this (what looks to be) great forum to listen and learn about all of the different nuances of stamp collecting. The majority of our stamps are from 1950 and before and from all over the world. Many of the stamps are from the German rule in Europe during both World Wars and many of them are from different countries from the same time periods. I've attached some of our favorite stamps we have sorted through so far!
Excited to be here and ready to learn! Trey

Hi and welcome to the great hobby of Stamps!
Where to go from here.?
1 get a large table or desk surface and sort the stamps into heaps by country of issue. 2 get hold of a second hand catalogue eg Scott’s or StanleyGibbons all world , old will do fine if you have just got older stamps. 3 get a stock book to hold your stamps and with the catalogue try to arrange in chronological order
4. Shout for help in identifying , someone here will know the answers……
5 have fun .

Welcome from the UK Trey stamplover433! So nice that you and your fiancée decided to start this hobby together! As others have said, please feel free to ask about anything you'd like to know here - we love to help. You asked about how to start with 5000 stamps. I would suggest you start by deciding if you want to collect by country or by theme (e.g. birds, trains, cars, etc.). Once you've decided that, you need to start making piles for those categories, and then work through one pile at a time. If you want to store the ones you're not ready to look at yet, look into getting some glassine envelopes or stock books as they will safely store your stamps until your are ready to sort them. Ultimately it's up to you how you'd like to sort and store your stamps - just do whatever you find pleasing and fun!

I think we are going to sort everything by country, as we want to travel the world, potentially to some of these places, so I think this would be a great place to start. Then sort through them country by country! Thanks for the advice!

Welcome to the forum and to this exciting hobby, I took up an old collection of my father a year and a half ago and since then I have not stopped accumulating, classifying, generating my own album pages, etc. I recommend you install the Stamps Identifier app, if you are an iphone user here is the link to the appstore apps.apple.com/uy/app/stamp-identifier/id1514872924?l=esyou can take a picture of any stamp and search for it on the Colnect database.

Hello
you must have read it already a few times but the way to start is :
- pile the stamps per country
- you can use a catalog but sometimes it is easier to sign in on colnect.com and download their stamp identifier app (play store). It recognises most stamps and gives you also the exact catalog numbers.
Hope you are still enjoying the hobby.

What I collect: Used only - Australia, Great Britain, Canada, Ireland, Western Europe, and Scandinavia, from 1900 to date. That keeps me busy. To be honest I am trying to avoid becoming a WW collector.

Welcome - Your find sounds like fun - and you will learn heaps just by sorting and researching those stamps. As people have said sort into countries first then look them up in catelogues. Enjoy the forum and enjoy the hobby!

Hello there, and welcome to TSF! We have sorted through some by country and denominations. Our problem is we have more stamps than our table can hold! Any tips or tricks on how to sort thousands of stamps would be great! I got a bunch of matching cardboard boxes; I think they're 8" x 8" x 2". Some hardware stores and industrial-supply outlets have these - not regular stationers as far as I can tell. They come flat and you fold them up yourself. They're cheap, and corrugated cardboard is the most recyclable material on the planet. And they stack up pretty nicely. Here is a sample of what I had in mind, though these are made more for gifts. And here's another one. They're advertised as mailers so they should be plenty strong for anything. Yeah, you'll also need glassine envelopes. Here's a typical example. Internet Hobby Supply has always been good with me, though I haven't really needed supplies for a while. Others here can recommend supplies of all kinds. I noticed some Austria that are just like ones I've been sorting through the last couple of weeks. They had some really mysterious-looking stamps in the 1920s.

eggdog: Why glassine envelopes over, say, Ziploc bags?

eggdog : Why glassine envelopes over, say, Ziploc bags? Welcome to the Forum! You have an adventure ahead of you. glassine envelopes do not hold moisture which could damage your stamps. I have used baggies for short term ie months but not as a longer solution. have fun David, Ottawa, Canada
