If you read the Newsletter and my scribblings a few posts back, you will know that I have at last been able to cross the NUMBER ONE from my Philatelic Bucket List ! As stated previously, a bit ugly, but beggars can't be choosers for this item ! At least it came from one of the early sheets perforated, before they got it right !! LONDON PHILATELIC EXHIBITION, 1890 (Together with an unoverprinted copy).

It's not too often I find bargains anymore for my British Philatelic Exhibition collection. Indeed it's not often that I add anything at all. But last week I found, after many years and missed opportunities, these three sheets that have been missing from the collection. They have found a good home. When one can find them in full sheets they can sell for up to £50 a set. These cost only a tenner, no other bids. Sometimes it happens !! 1936 London Stamp Exhibition 17-24 October, Dorland Hall, Regent Street, London. The labels depict a London Skyline at night topped by a Globe of the world. Above that flies a Dove. Can we assume it is a Dove of Peace given the rumblings of War, even as early as 1936 ? So a design of full meaning if that was the case. Can we also assume that given that these labels would have been prepared well before the Exhibition dates then the three colours chosen were of the new King Edward VIII definitives ? This is known to have been the case for the issue of labels for the 1923 and other Stamp Exhibitions. We might narrow down the printing of these sheets as sometime between September 1st, when the Blue, Brown & Green KEVIII stamps were issued, and September 14th when the Red stamp was available. The sheets were all ready for the event before the latter date or else why not issue the labels in red also ? But I digress. Printer not known by me. Nor is it known by the authors of 'British Philatelic Exhibitions' or they are just not letting on !! (doubtful) Perf 12½. Sheets or Sheetlets of 4 with marginal inscriptions. Very hard to find in such lovely condition. (I should know, I've been searching for 15 years !!) Sheets sold for 1d each at the Exhibition !! Londonbus1

The Association of Essex Philatelic Societies held their annual convention at different venues in the county each year. In 1961 the venue was the imposing 'Wanstead House'. For most of the conventions, souvenirs were not offered but there were exceptions, 1961 being one of them. Sheets in Blue and Green showing the Societies' logo were issued and the latter at least with a (possibly contrived) error. Reading up on the left side the word 'House' after Wanstead is missing !! I do not have a normal or Blue copy to show for comparison as like many British exhibition items, the supposedly 'common' items are very hard to come by. This is the only one I have ever seen !!! Wanstead House, London E.11 I have a very loose Philatelic connection to Wanstead which brings back such wonderful, yet ultimately sad, memories. There was a time when I would plan my holidays around the bi-annual Stampex or other stamp Exhibition being held in London. I would drive to Wanstead and park the car at the house of my Aunt and later in the day before driving back home, she would make me dinner and wanted to know about the Exhibition and any stamps I had purchased. She would look at them with great interest and ask questions. She was quite the scholar. They were very special visits for me. I did not go for a couple of years and then found out she was ill. She lived alone and my attempts to get in touch via her son proved futile and I never saw her again. Her son never contacted us or any other family member. It happens I know but did not pursue it. I would walk by this house but did not know at the time that it was used for Philatelic Events. Londonbus1

Nice labels jamesw ! The two in the previous post are part of a set of 4 issued for the 1955 Story of Stamps Exhibition at De La Rue House in London. A very attractive set. The little man in Pink also exists in Yellow and I thought he had made an appearance.........but I stand corrected. Nice one. They were printed in sheets of 10.

thegubman......looking through the list I see these have not been posted previously !! Whilst a lot of the Exhibitions/Events have been covered, there are still many out there that haven't !! Although the inscription on these sheets reads 'printed by permission of Her Majesty's Postmaster General', the Post Office ordered that 31,000 of each sheet be destroyed because 'they contravened the Fictitious Stamp Rules' !! What a sad cull that must have been. Here's an item that missed the execution.......... A gummed Proof copy of the Harrison Stamp Designs. Not sure how many of these exist but I have only seen another one copy. Londonbus1

Below is the sheet that replaced those thousands destroyed because of 'fictitious stamp rules' !! You will note there is no reference this time to the Exhibition and the reproductions are in black. There is also no mention of Wm.Clowes & Sons. The whole sheet was the work of Harrisons but apparently this whole episode caused tension and friction between them and the Post Office. Harrison & Sons were the major printer of British Postage stamps.

It's a very rare occasion these days when I add something to my British Philatelic Exhibition albums. But I spied this while looking for something else and was the lone bidder ! I have already shown some items from this event but this is the Imperf sheet (Wide Margin Variety) and is listed in the Catalogue. Never seen one before so was quite happy to find it. 1964 GERMANIA POSTA, 1st GERMAN PHILATELIC EXHIBITION & CONVENTION. Preston hall, Stockton-on-Tees, Sept.5th

I am in the middle of a discussion on Facebook with another collector of GB Exhibition items. I think I may have made a DISCOVERY not known before !!! Yet not difficult to see ! In 2016 I won a special one-off item auction at the 1st Cinderella Stamp Congress in London. The prize was 5 half panes of the 1912 'Ideal Stamp' from the Grover Archives which had been discovered abandoned a few months previously. All 5 blocks of 60 had mock Plate Numbers in the bottom margin. The Catalogues do not know what these stand for and I have not heard it discussed elsewhere. You can see a Plate Number on this half pane which was the prize in one of my Newsletter Giveaways won by firstfrog2013. It is assumed that the numbers are for the show dates 10-October and 12-1912. I have only now seen during my discussion on Facebook that the letters are S,T,A,M,P !!! Well, it's kind of a discovery, isn't it ? Grant me my moment of glory I might be the only one alive with a complete set of 'Plate' numbers ! (They don't exist on each sheet) Londonbus1.......off to bed !

1934 AIRPOST EXHIBITION, LONDON. A number of items have already been shown for this event and I'll admit to it being one of my favourite UK Stamp shows. All the more reason to have been frustrated for years not to have added these labels for an extra Air Post exhibition event that never was........the firing of one of Gerhard Zucker's famous rockets carrying mail over the River Thames !!! Cancelled because of bad weather, the firing did take place later in Sussex and the labels were used as a souvenir on that special day. The beautiful description below (from a German Rocket Post Catalogue) may have some slight mis-truths, who knows. But it's not far out. Only 1,000 sets were overprinted and 500 were used on covers. So 500 sets of Mint stamps exist. Tonight I got lucky. I think I deserved something nice and this was it. Cost a lot but then they always do. My thanks to Beryllium Guy for offering to accept the package in the UK. "Early 1934, the young German rocket pioneer and adventurer Gerhard Zucker left his home country, because he didn’t agree on Hitler’s military purpose of rockets and because the economic depression made it impossible to finance his experiments any longer. In relatively prosperous Great Britain, he was allowed by the authorities to launch rockets carrying mail. His first successful attempts over land were in Sussex Downs on 6 June. Zucker left for the Outer Hebrides, joined by his publicity advisor Robert Hartman and stamp dealer Heinz Dombrowsky. A rocket, that was at that time the largest in the world, filled with 1,200 letters with stamps that had been issued for the occasion, was to be launched 28 July from the beach of the small and remote island of Scarp to the island of Harris. The small population of this 2,532 acre island hoped that this new technology would relieve their isolation. Unfortunately, the rocket exploded straight away and with its remainders, the letters were scattered all over the beach, having been destroyed or damaged. These covers were later to become sought-for collector’s items. The experiment was repeated vice-versa three days later with the same result. After continuing his experiments in Italy, Zucker came back to Britain for a last attempt with a rocket flight from Lymington to the Isle of Wight in December, which proved equally unsuccessful. After having returned to Nazi Germany, Zucker did not cooperate on the development of the later V1 and V2 rockets, although he volunteered in the Luftwaffe in the second World War. Living in Hasselfelde in the Harz, he found himself a citizen of the German Democratic Republic after the war but moved to the Federal Republic later. He was involved in several peaceful rocket flights with special stamps and cachets in the sixties and died in his sleep in 1985. The island of Scarp was abandoned by its last inhabitants in 1949 / 1971. In 2001 the movie The Rocket Post, inspired on Zucker’s episode on Scarp, was recorded on nearby Taransay and Harris. After several essays, Zucker had six different labels issued for the Sussex Downs experiment, all overprints on philatelic exhibition labels in six different colours. These were the first labels used for mail in rocket flights in Great Britain. In total 6,000 of these stamps exist, of which almost half were used on covers."

British Philatelic Exhibition 1967I found this to be a very interesting GB Exhibition Cinderella, printed on card stock. For comparison, I have included the postage stamp from Ireland on which the design on the Cinderella is based. Terri ( philatelia), would this be an item of interest to you for your Ireland collection? If so, please PM me!

My 1890 London Philatelic Exhibition label with 'Overprint double' has arrived ! It now resides alongside one of his brothers which was purchased a while ago. (you can see the stamp a few posts back). If this 'unissued' Mauritius stamp did actually go there before being rejected (unwanted?) then just think of the journeys it has made. From Perkins Bacon in London to Mauritius sometime before 1864. Sometime after the rejection and up to 1890 it returned to London still in it's imperf state. Then it was perforated and bashed with a few red numbers and letters at the Exhibition and sold to someone. Then for 130 years where has it been ? How many collectors have looked after it, cared for it, researched it ? Then it travelled again to me, possibly for the first time by air....or maybe not. Who knows !! The life of a stamp is certainly interesting. If only they could talk. They would have a tale to tell. Anyway, to celebrate the arrival of the much-travelled piece of paper let's add another to.....Philatelic Exhibitions--------Great Britain. PHILYMPIA 1970. Two Photographic Essays for the Official Show cover Cache for the 1970 show which was held at Olympia, London.

They did go to Mauritius, here's the story: The first consignment of 100,000 Britannia stamps were un-denominated and the colour providing the value (33,334 red, 33,333 green and 33,333 dull magenta). These arrived in Mauritius in 1849 but weren't initially used. A further order of 100,000 vermillion and 50,000 blue where sent in 1857. The original green (surcharged 4d), dull magenta and vermillion stamps were used but the original red and the later blue ones weren't used and were returned to the UK and sold to collectors as remainders. Stocks of these remainders were bought by Perkins Bacon for the L.P.E. exhibition. From Gibbons Stamp Monthly May 2014:

I am awaiting the arrival of this very nice corner block from the 1912 Jubilee International Stamp Exhibition. The Olive-Grey is a relatively scarce colour and in such a nice block with Jubilee lines.....I couldn't resist ! There is one mark on the bottom middle stamp but otherwise pretty good.

The block shown in the previous post has arrived. Perfect MNH. (Except the mark). Love it. To celebrate here are a couple of items from a Thematic Stamp Exhibition !! 1962 Polish Philatelic Society Stamp Day & Manchester Thematic Stamp Exhibition. 6th-7th October 1962 at the Polish ex-Servicemen's Club, Manchester. The Souvenir Sheets commemorate 100 years of Hong Kong and Antigua Stamps. Designed by K.Minkievicz they also depict a Post Rider with Horn. Exists also on Grey and Yellow papers. These are missing from my lot so if anyone should spy them somewhere.............

Although not strictly speaking a stamp exhibition, The Daily Mail Schoolboys and Girls Exhibition (27th December 1965 to 8th January 1966) did include stamp collecting. Moreover, Glenn Morgan includes it his excellent British Stamp Exhibitions, available online, and if it's good enough for him, I hope it's good enough for us!. The Crown Agents had the Perkins Bacon Press (used to print the Penny Black) and produced this sheet using De La Rue dies, featuring a block of 1866 British Honduras stamps, to print on parchment paper. It took 3 minutes to print each sheet and only 500 were produced but try and find one! Scan_20200509 by Daniel, on Flickr
