Hello, I've been concentrating on my collection of German stamps until recently but have just picked up a collection of Austrian stamps from 1965 to 1984 (all UMM in a Lighthouse album) at a very good price. So, I've decided to collect Austria as well. I'll probably focus on going back in time from 1965 rather than forward from 1984. Do any of you more experienced Austrian collectors have any tips for me? Any good dealers, websites to buy from? Best catalogues? Quirks of Austrian philately I should know about?
Grateful for any advice / assistance you can offer.

Hello and welcome evan !
There are two useful catalogues for Austria: Austria Nettokatalog (ANK) and Michel, both in German.
There is the ANK-Standard-Katalog (price around € 30.-),what is more than sufficient for a "normal" collector. There is also ANK-Spezial-Katalog (price around € 60.-),what maybe useful,if you want to go for very detailed listings.
Michel Österreich Spezial (the current one is € 72.-,the one due in December will be € 82.-) is on the same level,as the ANK-Spezial. (my Michel Österreich Spezial is the 1980/81;still good enough for me)
The standard Michel, what lists Austria,Liechtenstein and Switzerland goes for € 54.-.Again good enough for a "normal" collector. Postage might or will be extra, depending where you live.
My own collection ends with the introduction of the Euro. I have a good deal of duplication for exchange from the 1945-1965 periode.

One pitfall for Hapsburg-era Austria: inspect the currency carefully. Similar designs were used for Lombardy-Venetia, but in Soldi, and for Austrian offices in the Ottoman Empire but denominated in piasters. Dealers often mix them up. It is not just a matter of the danger of dealers passing off the cheaper version for one more expensive. Surprisingly often, they overlook the currency so some very valuable stamps may hide in plain sight as something cheap.
Early Austrian stamps can be drab, but look at the postmarks. Many are from cities that were in the Austrian Empire, but are now in Czechia, Slovakia, Romania, or even Ukraine. Recognizing and placing them can be a challenge, as the old German names on the postmarks do not always resemble the more familiar names you can find on a map.

Welcome to the forum and to collecting beautiful Austrian stamps! I collect them, too. There are so many lush engravings, definitives with many varieties, several post offices in other countries and much more! And if you like modern philatelic oddities the very recent recent issues are bizarre - printed on everything from leather to toilet paper! Have fun!

to TSF! I don't collect Austria too much, but have always been an admirer of their engraved artwork stamps. A great place to be!

Welcome. I'm another Austrian collector. Got interested after a visit to Salzburg and Vienna a few years ago. On the trip, I bought a Michel catalogue (I can get by reading German) and a bag full of on-paper modern definitives. Later, I acquired a couple of collections and have built a sizable collection from there. Now sorting through the 1890-1906 definitive issues and looking for varieties. The engraving on the issues from the 20s and 30s is really great and there is a lot of history to be learned from the post-war issues. I have a lot of duplicates, so, if there is something you are missing, send me a pm; I might be able to help. Reid Rothesay, Canada
