What I collect: It's complicated....

I just started a thread about off-size Vario sheets. Now I'd like to start a thread about off-size DIY albums.
Say I was to get a 3-hole D-ring clip (what are those things called, anyway? I don't think they're clips, and "assembly" seems too vague) and I can find the pages I want, which are up to 275mm in width. I'd probably have to make my own album covers. What's a good material to use? Wood is an obvious choice but it would be heavy and bulky. Cardboard, yeah - I think Avery binders are basically cardboard in a vinyl sleeve heat-sealed around the edges. But what kind of cardboard? And could I fasten the D-ring to it?
Substituting contact paper for the vinyl would be OK, yes? Or should I consider other options, in particular ones that don't involve heat-sealers?
Does this make any sense?
Thanks.

If you are looking for an oversized 3 ring binder, We R Memory Keepers sells a 12x12 (from crafting hobby) with protective sleeves. The binder includes 25 protective sleeves. Due to thick cover they can sit upright on shelf without a slip cover. I use the smaller size to store my US mini-sheets, coil strips. etc. I would visit youtube university to see how to make a binder from scratch.

Hi eggdog
With the relativly inexpensive price of binders, why bother making a binder? Yes, it is a noble effort, but possibly an expensive one in time and money. As a suggestion, go to a local "mom and pop" printer and see what they come up with. You may be surprised. I use quadrille blank pages and the printer was cheaper than buying at a store.

There are D-Ring binders available that will allow for a printed "cover" page" to be inserted into the front/back, as well as the spine

Jerry B Hi Jerry, I kind of messed up here and started two threads with related subjects. This would have been a lot more clear if I'd just combined the two. I'm looking for a binder for pr-self-adhesive United States sheets. There's some I want to keep (the 50 state birds, the 50 flags from ?1975, etc.) in a safer place than a White Ace paperback glassine album. They'd have to be quite a bit wider than the Avery and Universal binders that I use for almost everything else: the sheets need to be a minimum of 9½" wide (245 mm). The other thread was about oversized Vario pages for the same purpose. But thanks! Local printers are dying out in the wake of Staples, and I think Staples is trying to convert into online-only and really wants to close their retail stores in areas like where I live. So we've got to conserve what we have. We buy food from local farmers whenever we can, for the same reason. I've got a laser printer and a few reams of paper, but I really don't want to try to get a lithography machine into the basement!

Hi eggdog
I went to college at Cooper Union and NYU.
I see you collect some Central America. Gran Colombia (Colombia, Ecuador and Venezuela) is very interesting. There are so few Latin America collectors.
