As part of my New Caledonia collection, I have a small but growing group of the limited release imperforate stamps common to most countries in the French Community. These are listed and valued in the French catalogs, but not in Scott. Scott does present a note between 305 and 306: "Most stamps of New Caledonia from 1958 onward exist imperforate, in trial colors, or in small presentation sheets in which the stamps are printed in changed colors." Scott does not value or list these because they were never postally valid and they were never widely available. I recall that years ago, many American collectors felt the imperfs were an expensive philatelic gimmick. I don't think that is still true. I like them because they are still hard to find at a good price, and I simply like the look of imperforate modern stamps. I hope you enjoy these. This is a pair of Scott 300, 1955, from a trial color sheet. On the issued stamp, the trees, the sky, and the rocks offshore were all brown. Scott 307-10 from 1959, a very handsome set of fish and corals. Scott 306, 2958, from the Human Rights common design set. Scott 343, marking the centenary of the Amedee Lighthouse, a prominent landmark.

And a few more. Scott 557-58, 1987, local pirogues. Scott C80, 1971, The One Ton Cup yacht race. One of my favorites. Scott C91, 1972, first flight Paris-Noumea in 1932. This is from the last row of a trial color sheet, what some call a progressive proof sheet. Trial color sheets are printed with five rows of five stamps each. The first three or four rows will be in different solid colors. The last row will combine the colors differently on the five stamps. This pair was cut from the last row. The stamp as issued was very different from this, with rose lilac, blue, and green.

How about some more imperfs? New Caledonia Scott C85, 1971, 40th Anniversary of Victor Roffe's first flight New Caledonia-Australia in 1931. Scott C88 from 1972, the UNESCO campaign to save Venice. Scott C92, 1972, South Pacific Festival of Arts, Fiji. French Polynesia issued a similar design. Ain't that a lot of paper? Scott C139-40, 1977, Airports in New Caledonia.

And more from sunny New Caledonia. Here is a large block from Stamp Day, 1973, Scott C106. Next are a couple of the de lux proof sheets that Francophile countries usually printed for issued stamps. Scott C104, marking the first flight by DC-10, Noumea-Paris, 1973. And the 50th anniversary of that first flight to Australia, Scott C179, de lux sheet and imperf pair, 1981.
