Hi, I am a new member. I collect mails and postmarks of the foreign powers from Constantinople (Levant). I have a question about the meaning/use of the letters in the British postmarks (A,B,C and D….I did not find others). Example attached. I read in many posts on the web (also in this website) that these are Time codes or Code times. But what does this really mean? For example, what time the letter C stands for? thanks

These letters A,B, ETC identify which counter or which postal clerk was on duty to cancel the mail.
This was considered important incase of any enquiry or delay . I think it identifies the counter duty so it probable covers a period of several hours of use rather than the time ,which would be more precise.
