Not sure if this stamp is as good as it looks with couple of dollars value if I am lucky! or is it only just looks ?? I couldnt find any information anywhere on it...  Thanks |

Private die proprietary stamp from J. Ellwood Lee Company. I think you have the hyphen hole 7 perforation. In the Scott US Specialized catalog, RS293p.
I don't collect revenue stamps, but I think you have the pink paper variety. I will leave that to someone else to confirm/correct.
Then the 2017 US catalog value is US$2.75.

Thanks Private die proprietary stamps were first introduced by the Revenue Act of 1862 to help fund the Civil War. Tax was applied to matches, proprietary medicines, perfumery, playing cards and documets. Manufacturers were permitted to print their own stamps at a discount and were good advertising items. The Revenue Act was repealed in 1883. However, the Act was re-introduced in 1898 to help fund the Spanish-American War. That tax was repealed in 1902. Your stamp is dated 1898 and falls into this latter period. J Ellwood Lee Company of Conshohocken, Pennsylvania manufactured medical products. It was acquired by Johnson and Johnson in 1905 with Ellwood Lee joining the board at that time. Daniel |
