Yesterday, I found this in a cheap box lot. How cheap? Well, the shipping cost more than the box. Yes, it has a big flaw at the bottom, but check the frame. Nice spacefiller, eh?

Wow! Great catch! Gives me new hope for the box I'm currently digging through. Hopefully I find something like that.

What I collect: I collect world wide up to 1965 with several specialty albums added due to volume of material I have acquired. At this point I am focused on Canada and British America. I am always on the lookout for stamps and covers with postmarks from communities in Queens County, Nova Scotia. I do list various goods including stamps occasionally on eBay as hdm50

It is especially nice that it is not heavily obliterated like so many of these small stamps in this set.

it's always exciting to go through a box of unknowns - the thrill of finding something good - and apart from the obvious you have some nice perfs. there - well done. This is our hero thinking he'd arrived at the eastern seaboard of the continent of India (what he called 'the Indies'), or China, and in fact he must have been reading the map upside down because he ended up going west and not east. Don't know whether this image is intended to show his landing in either the Bahamas or Venezeula - apparently it was the Pacific that confused them because they weren't aware - then - of it's existence. The sharp retort to the expression that he discovered America, usually gets the reply 'no, he didn't, the Indians/Vikings were there long before 1492.' Just a personal opinion, but this unpredictability gives far more fun than going - as I did this morning to SG in the Strand, London - and simply being a cheque book collector, and low value 'used' stamps though not an investment normally, have lived such a 'travelled' life.

My sister gave me a "Luck O the Irish" bracelet to wear to Bingo. I was wearing it while sifting through this box lot. LoL too funny! They should market those to Stamp Collectors!
Thanks for nice comments, friends. I really like the VERY light cork cancel, too. Just fix the one little missing chunk at the bottom and adjust the centering then this would could be a gem.

Nice find Terri! philatelia , May I say this is the exception to my normal philosophy of "destroy damaged stamps" (well common ones anyway.) So why is retention justified in this case ? 1 It actually looks nice 2 Scarce, it has a catalogue value $$$ -$$$$ much too good to discard 3 the damage at the foot is relatively minor and does not go in to the design. 4 a small fragment from another stamp with a spare tooth placed behind the damage ....not necessarily a repair, just a disguise could hide the tear, making it less of a distraction as a nice space filler 5 when are you going to find another within budget? Always a consideration to us non-Rockefellers .

For those of us not versed in US stamps, could you share what catalog code/year that stamps is?

For our non-USA collectors and newer collectors who may wonder what I meant by “check the frame”, there are two main types for this design. Here is the 2020 Scott Specialized Catalog info explaining the difference:

Hope philatelia (Terri) will forgive me for adding just a little to her v. interesting discovery of the Columbus stamp (no pun intended) - I hadn't realized just how popular his character was to U.S. stamp designers - amazing what you learn on TSF. Here are a few more - not as good as philatelia's find, but perhaps some interest. No idea really why the guy went to queen Isabella (Spain) for sponsorship initially (he was Italian apparently), and have a feeling they showed him the door first off, but he persisted and the rest as they say is history. I've little knowledge of these stamps other than the probability that they formed part of a set issued in 1892 (because this is the date shown on all of them):- 1. Columbus Soliciting Aid of Isabella - 5c. 2. Flag Ship of Columbus - 3c. 3. Fleet of Columbus - 4c. 4. Columbus in Sight of Land - 1c. 5. Landing of Columbus - 2c. 6. Columbus Welcomed at Barcelona - 6c. - looks to be two colours - pale lilac and blue. 7. Columbus Presenting Natives - 10c. 8. Columbus Restored to Favor - 8c. Whether I have this lot in the correct order - no idea - but the wording could be the right sequence - can't imagine these are of any real value and apologies that condition is poor for some of them. Expect you have all of these and more Terri, but if of interest I can send gratis.

I remember being a young child and every week going to the Post Office with my dad with a quarter clutched in my hand to buy a postal savings stamp. Once the stamp was purchased to then pull out the booklet that held the stamps until I could turn them in filled with the stamps and get a Savings bond in exchange and a new empty booklet. It was the highlight of my week paying for one of those stamps. In the 1950's when I was growing up a quarter was a lot of money. A $25.00 savings bond was a really big deal of an accomplishment. After school my classmates would all go to the local candy store and buy chewing gum and lollipops and I would maybe buy maybe one item. Any change went into my piggy bank, and I would do all sort of errands and yard work to earn a few extra pennies so I could get to my next Postal savings stamp. I was sad when the Post Office stopped selling them, but I sure enjoyed getting them and achieving my goal to fill a booklet and turn it in. I kick myself now that I didn't keep the last partially filled booklet. I always look for them but so far have not found any. Going to the Post Office and going to the UN with my dad are memories I cherish.
