The IPDA is a non-profit Organization that was formed in 2002 to give stamp collectors confidence when buying from internet-based dealers. As well as to encourage the hobby of stamp collecting. Our eventual goal is to make the internet a safer and more secure place for philatelists to buy stamps. The vision that the internet would impact dealers and sellers of stamps as well as collectors has turned into today's reality. We are finding that by becoming a member of the IPDA and trading under a Code of Ethics a stamp dealer is able to establish credibility within the philatelic buying community. Members who trade under the IPDA banner are fully committed to promoting philately on the internet, and the Association works to promote our individual members businesses. We also allow our members to display our well-known logo. Membership in the IPDA is open to all part-time and full-time stamp dealers who sell stamps and philatelic material on a web site, an e-auction site or a buy-it-now e-store or, individuals who may be engaged in related philatelic activities, such as online selling of philatelic accessories, and the valuation and/or certification of stamps. Please visit www.ipdastamps.com and view the details for qualifications, fees and the online Application form from the "Apply to Join" menu. If you have any further questions, please feel free to ask me. Luree aka Reena

In todays' market, ie selling on line there are many dealers that really don't know what or how they could/should be correctly identifying stamps. IPDA has a high code of ethics that will help them to grow their business. Such as proper scanning of the front and backs of stamps, not overlapping of stamps, etc. We also have an Internet Listing and Selling Guideline to help the sellers. Gaining trust in our customers will always keep them coming back. So, when a customer sees they are a member of IPDA, they know they are dealing with a trusted dealer.

Yes, The IPDA is a great organization for DEALERS. But - I’m not a dealer, just a collector selling her duplicates, so I would feel like I was being misleading if I were to display a dealer organization logo. Besides, I bet dealers would like to tar and feather collectors like me who are basically giving away stamps. LoL Besides, I don’t want to run a store or keep inventory - I just want to give away my duplicates with enough payment to cover the expenses while I’m still able to do so.

Angore,
Thank you for your question.
I'm not sure I understand your question, but with the Internet platform of selling the buyer can't have that face-to-face handle of the stamp deal like at shows for example. With the Internet platform, the buyer is at the mercy of the seller to correctly identify the item as well as be honest and have high ethics.
If this is not the answer to your question, please be more specific so I might be able to help you.

Theresa,
I totally understand that sellers/givers like yourself are not interested in IPDA. I respect your wishes. This is raise the level of sellers/dealers on the Internet to higher ethics. NOT saying you have low ethics, you don't. It's just some "new" kids out in the world need to learn from the "older" ones that are willing to share their incredible knowledge.

I believe the group could be for all dealers - store only and those on the Internet (exclusively or not).

Can you explain how the organization would vet an ebay seller who asks to join? (Not me...some random ebay seller.)

cjd, thank you for your question.
There is a diligent process in place for a new IPDA applicant which includes a review of the applicant's store, history, feedback, imaging and description of items, store policies including shipping and returns, along with several other criteria. An applicant must affirm to abide by the IPDA code of Ethics, violation of which is subject to sanctions up to and including expulsion.

Is there a way for a collector who is more of a buyer than a seller to report to this organization when a seller burns the buyer? Even if that person is not a member of this organization?
Because I sell duplicates I accidently purchased, I have very low sales I doubt I would make $25.00 a year. As a result, I would not qualify to become a member. Online sales are becoming the main solution for collectors to buy stamps. The issue I keep running into is that the USPO takes forever to deliver the stamps a seller sends to a buyer. HIP will close the transaction after it has been open for a period of time. I had such a situation when I was communicating back and forth with the seller and one day the record was closed even though we were using the HIP stamp site to communicate, and I was out $$$$$. It would be great to get your newsletter even as a buyer who buys almost everything on-line from various sites. Buyers need an organization to help each other get resolution to problems, issues and etc. Nick
