Ok a couple of years ago I started to seriously go through my Machin's I've now run out of stockbook room and after being relieved of a couple of hundred got some new stockbook to archive the cylinder blocks only and free off extra individual stockbooks, I thought "hmmm" I really did think I'd made a dent in the Machin pile, until I started chucking them altogether and OMG I've still got loads to go through this is about 1/3 of them, hopefully in the future I will have a lot of duplicates and list them using Deegam for swaps or wants if I've not been put into a mental institution in the meantime πππ

Well let's hope you don't get put in a mental institution before you've finished sorting. May I ask, have you specialised in Enschede(yellow fluor and and blue fluor with blue/white gums) and DLR Paper Types (bright, intermediate, dull)? If you've got a couple to offload -> wink wink, nudge nudge

Not sure about sanity where philately is concerned it's in there somewhere?? Most of the Machins I won at auction last week have been dealt with. I ended up with a few duplicate singles, 3 items with good flaws on them (1 doctor blade flaw 1 phosphor variation & a litho ring flaw). I still have a bunch of cylinder blocks to deal with. The other auction lot was composed of covers which I have been working on since last Saturday. In fact a lot of the covers are Machins so these have been separated from the other commemoratives. The scans show my dining room table at the moment, (well some of it anyway). WittybebopFirst scan back of table left to right (a pile of phq cards which were found in between covers) album containing more covers on top of their album pages. (box of mounts with cover inserts on top) Front album pages with corresponding covers, 3 piles of covers, damaged, eBay, keepers. Bottom right duplicate stamps/covers & flaws. Second scan back left Machins regionals album with box on top containing 5 cover albums, front adding covers to album 1.

impressive drblade - I doubt that it matters the dining room table is out of action - doesn't sound as though you get time to eat anyway! As for magnifiers, I use what you see in the attached picture - it has multiple magnification in the way of separate heads of X5, X6 and X10 powers - I find this a very useful gadget.

That's a fine lot to be going through Drblade, I decided some years ago to simplify my collection to GB MNH, so I've never done PHQ and first day covers although I have a couple of odd ones somewhere, I do buy from the PO new commemss, but discard all the packaging in a "Scrap" box just so I can put the stamps in order.

Eschenbach are excellent optics, I have used 2 over the years mainly the linen tester variety, 8x and 12x, oddly enough I was in a Opticians the other day and they had a whole display of them however they are expensive.

From memory I think these came from a boot sale, so no great expense. I also use a separate single small hand held, supplementary, lens of unknown power - it's simply held between camera and subject, and provided I don't have the dts the results can be very useful - downside is that it can distort straight lines on occasions, but v.g. for magnifying detail.

Thanks for the info on these, my magnifier is getting to be a nuisance as it tends to swing around on the hinge.

I too don't do PHQ cards in fact apart from sending them as postcards I'm not a fan of them. Gonna take me awhile to scan that lot for eBay.

As for the Eschenbach magnifiers, although perhaps most folk will already know, I had intended to mention that one of their best features is that these things illuminate at the touch of a switch.
