How to get a nicely canceled stamp when mailing in the USA: Place the stamp on the envelope as shown in the pictures. This will catch the city and date part of the spray cancel and avoid the obliterating wavy lines. Nice, yes?
FYI - I’ve been getting mail with a city/date spray cancel but NO wavy lines OR slogan cancels. This placement does yield a cancel in those cases.
The first pic shows a gauge I adapted when the spray cancels were first used. I originally made the gauge to get SON (Sock on the Nose) cancels with a CDS (City/Date Stamp) cancel
