Hi all! I recently was reading some articles on a blog about how both under-collected and under-valued modern stamps are by entrenched collectors, and while I know there are many different opinions on this, it did make me think about how much I enjoy collecting definitive issues because they usually can be fairly deep subjects to study and enjoy. I know the most popular by far of modern definitive issues has to be the Machins of Great Britain, but as I was browsing different sites, I wanted to start a thread here to try to get a sense of what the different definitives across the world are.

I made a small list of countries I collect, with some information from a quick Google & Colnect search, and I welcome any and all help in expanding this list as well!

I love this topic, @kobland . I was working through my Australia stamps, from ~ 1970 - 1980 and wondering the same thing. I'll work up what I think works for Australia once I get to 2000 but it will be a best guess.

One of the things I love about the Unitrade catalogue for Canada is they are very detailed definitive issues, with print quantities and other material, including reference to other, more detailed literature for the specific issue.

My general Scott catalogues don't have that level of detail, which makes sense. But still, I don't know where to find more info without buying specialist catalogues for every country (which would be amazing, but very unlikely!)

For example, take Australia Scott 523-525, the "rehabilitiation of the handicapped" issue from 1972. Colnect has this set listed under Definitive issues. I assume it's because the stamps are different denominations (12c, 18c, 24c).

But my personal 'definitive definition' also expects the stamps to be issued for an extended period (more than a year), possibly go through multiple print runs, etc. So I'd have the definitive sets of that period be:

- Scott 394 - 417 ( 1966-1971: Queen Elizabeth for the low values, fish in the middle, seafarers for the high values)

- Scott 554 - 579 (1973 - 1984: crabs and minerals low values, animals in the middle, paintings for the high)

But then what of the bird series of 1978-79 and the butterflies in 1983? I'd include them as defins too, even though they run in parallel with the previous set, but I'm totally guessing there.

I fear this is going to be another one of those 'collect what you like' dilemmas, due to inconsistent issuing policies from country to country. I'm going to likely stick to an extremely personal and inconsistent "long set" collection.

What I collect: Germany in all its facets since 1871 (especially German Reich used including postal statinoneries, used), USSR, Austria, Switzerland, Luxembourg, Liechtenstein, Denmark, France. I design all album pages for my collection myself and partly make them available to the general public for use.

I am happy to add to the list for Germany, in this case for the Federal Republic.

German buildings, large design (1966-1969)
Brandenburg Gate (1966-1967)
Federal President Heinemann (1970-1973)

Castles and palaces (1977-1982)

With the exception of the post horn and the series with the Federal Presidents, these definitive stamp series were also issued in West Berlin (until 1990...)

A real good topic.
Norway has the famous Posthornseries, running from 1877 and is still going.
Then we have the lion I, II and III from the 1920-30-40-50 with and without watermark.
In the 1960's a new series was born, local motifs with and without phosphor.

But the Belgian and Netherlands definitives I like most. lots of stuff to look after. Color, re engraved, perfs and so on.

The 'Wildings' were issued between 1952 and 1970.

The 'Machins' replaced the 'Wildings' from 1967. However, the regional 'Machins' were only issued after decimalisation. New regional 'Wildings' that were valid throught the UK, except for the Bailiwicks of Guernsey and Jersey were issued even late in 1970.
