Noting the date on this and the fact black ink was not properly introduced this early could this have been done in error or experimentally as written in the article?! Does anyone have a fool-proof method how to determine if this is genuine and/or which maltese cross it is? I think it looks interesting but apologies I cannot provide more detail and do not know at what point the stamp was removed

Mr. Thomas Taplin Clatford Near Andover Market
3rd August 1840 Wills Longparish Letter to Mr T Taplin
Opinion only! I have both as a London Type 1 Maltese Cross (Yes, the Black MC looks dodgy) Sorry, Type ll Maltese Cross (small centre diamond)
Source The cancellations of the Penny red Goldsmith Danzig
PS: could not find any info on a Thomas Taplin of Clatford.
PPS: The change of cancellation colour to Black, was introduced in February 1841

The Mulready stationery was issued as prepaid letter sheets and envelopes. The front of which would have consisted of just the first illustrated panel. Are the other 2 panels/items actually attached to it and can we see the reverse? Thanks, Daniel

Looking closer, I would suggest that you have two covers showing, one overlapping the other. Probably both addressed to Thomas Taplin and the note applies to the cover with the missing stamp.

I had been wondering similar, the Mulready had been cancelled (genuine or not) Black MC Why then would another stamp be required? I have an image of the Mulready "woodblock" I have no idea how, or what this was used for. Any ideas?
