This stamp has a special place in my heart as it came out in 1957, just 5 days before my eleventh birthday. I was living with family at Ramey Air Force Base in Puerto Rico. My father was a B36 bomber pilot. We had been eagerly anticipating the arrival of this stamp as it was promoted in the stamp collecting column in the newspaper, the Air Force Times.
These two FDCs are handmade from aviation maps, the top cover with the first day machine cancel, the other with the first day hand cancel. These are less common than most, but certainly not rare. I don't go after many cachets. My larger interest is covers showing commercial mail and personal mail use.
The top cover I have had for a few years. The bottom cover arrived today.
I can still remember arriving at the base post office to buy a plate block for my collection. Regretably it did not survive the unairconditioned and humid environment, and the sticky fingers of an 11-year old kid.
