Whats the best way you guys have found for identifying difficult watermarks? I'm using a recently purchased insta watermark detector, but is useless on used or previously mounted stamps. I don't really want to fork out a lot of money for another watermark detector if they proof to be no better than I already am using.

Liquid style lighter fluid and a black background (like a 2 dollar watermark tray). Best way of detecting any watermark and it's the cheapest method. I hope this helps some?

A big economy size can of zippo fuel was $5 at a few drops per a few stamps lasts a long time.

I certainly don't think you'll quite need a gallon..lol my Zippo can reads 4fl.oz. and that's lasted almost a year and still have 1/3 left and I been doing Washington/Franklin issues of 1908-1920 so that should give you an idea how little you really need. Good luck to you!
