Hmmmm, not so sure about that Mr. Frog. I have reigned in my spending of late, Cinderellas were once a cheap enjoyment, $5 for a page of weird stuff, was a pleasant distraction to plating Czechoslovakia, or working Romania. Not any more, prices have skyrocketed over the past 5 years. I save now, and buy selected material perhaps once a month, one needs to afford a base rate of around $100 to get anything significant. Budgeting has become even more important. My cheap enjoyment now has transferred over to Souvenir sheets, these are still affordable in the lower range. From what I have seen of yours, you have quite a significant collection of Canadian material, that will hold its value very nicely Sir.

When my second girl was eight or nine I tried to get her interested in stamps. Her choice was Australia, that's when I realized I knew nothing of the watermarks etc.I only invested $50 or so and she lost interest.I believe I passed her stamps on to another collector.Too bad,now my oldest and youngest are trying to learn about dad's stuff. One cause she sees dollar signs the other cause it's Dad's hobby.I'm guessing I have pretty much made up my mind where things end up.I do however have a twenty year clause written in before anything can be sold.I am confident it will force knowledge about what's here.My guitars are another story.

And these. The Duchess of Kent has a particularly haunted look. Her husband, the Duke, and King George VI's younger brother, would die in a military plane crash in 1942. You think she knew?

I assume, because of the oval perforations, that this is one of those labels that come with postage stamps (therefore making them cinderellas). Can anyone give me a year and what stamp this lovely birthday label for Her Majesty? I'm guessing Machins, because I'm not seeing any birthday issues in my old Scott's. thanks

Great Britain. 16th April 1996. Walsall Security Printers.
Booklet contained this label and 4x1st Class Machins in Bright Orange-Red. The stamps were to the left of the label. Unfolded panes were available from the Philatelic Service ONLY, for collectors.
This was the third in a series of 'Label Panes' issued by RM. This one for the Queens 70th birthday.

Two types of all panes exist both in booklets and unfolded, those with and without Cylinder numbers. Both could be ordered from the Philatelic Service, those with Cylinder numbers being the more scarce.

Two interesting GB items. First is a set of 4 Fundraising stamps by Harrison & Sons for the Lord Mayor of London'sNational Thanksgiving Fund. Rather pricey for 1950. !! These were the first ever non-postage stamps to be sold over the counters of Post Offices in the UK. Issued ungummed, relatively scarce. Below is a die-cut Self-Adhesive label celebrating the 80th Anniversary of Harmers Stamp Auctioneers. [1998]

MABEL LUCIE ATTWELL [1879-1964] British Author and Illustrator. The three postcards below are just a sprinkling of her designs . Her drawings appeared in magazines, on China, Greetings cards,Posters and more. She started illustrating for Postcards around 1914. These are from the 1930's. But it is not about postcards that we are here. I have just received an old album page courtesy of an eBay seller of two designs that form part of a set of 10 produced in a booklet. I already had one from a year ago and fell in love with the 'Britishness' and the cute illustration. The album page came together with a connotation that the labels are most likely the work of Mabel Lucie Attwell, so similar are the designs to her work' Judge for yourself. If anyone knows anything about these I would love to know. If they are yours Mabel......then thank you. Gems. Londonbus1.......I'm in love !

I don't have much info about the following label which I won recently on eBay quite cheaply. I know there was a small discussion about it somewhere but cannot find it. Off to search for something. From Linns. 'The beautifully engraved design shows a bearded salt gazing manfully into the distance, flanked by a sailing ship on his left and a dreadnought on his right. The sailor vignette is framed by an old-fashioned doughnut-shaped life preserver. The label was created around the turn of the 20th century by John Player & Sons, Ltd. of Nottingham, England, to advertise a brand of cigarettes it produced. "Navy Cut" in the brand name refers to the way that 19th-century British tars would wind rolls of twine around tobacco leaves and allow them to cure under pressure, before slicing off the end and shredding the tobacco.'

A very appropriate-looking advertising label for the 1913 Confectioners and Bakers Exhibition. But can anyone tell me what is the connection between the label and Philately...apart from the obvious of course. !

Well, shiver me timbers, never knew that, and often wondered why in my youth, thought it was just a advertising gimmick. The two ships inside the Life preserver are of previous HMS Hero One, the 1803 HMS hero was lost on Christmas day 1811 with all her Crew The ship on the Right Hand Side ended up in CANADA HMS Hero (H99), an H-class destroyer launched in 1936 and transferred to Canada as HMCS Chaudiere in 1943, broken up 1946Well there goes that assumption. The link is dicky, select the whole line with the mouse, and click en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Player's_Navy_Cut

I can see now, why I couldn't recognise the style of Sailor's Cap on the logo. it is an logo artist impression on the Logo, taken from the painting, not very accurately.

CYCLISTS' TOURING CLUB.
The label below was produced for the Jubilee in 1928 but I have been unable to find anything out about it, or if there are any others from this organization. Printed by Perkins Bacon.
The Cyclists' Touring Club were founded as the Bicycle Touring Club in Harrogate, Yorkshire and are a Charitable organization looking after the welfare of cyclists.
More info here: You will see the logo has changed since the printing of the label [central orange wheel]

Interesting Art deco designs from Dulac.
Edit: The Avenue Press; Poster printers 1910-1980, Bouverie St., London. Had a contract with London Transport and printed many posters/artwork for them. They also printed other WWI Poster Stamps.

Two strikingly similar labels for London Exhibitions, but at different venues. Surely the work of the same printer ? No info on that as yet.

The Christian Endeavour movement was founded by Francis Clark at Portland,Maine,USA in 1881. It is a youth-based movement and still exists today. Shown below is a label advertising the 24th Convention in 1914. Other labels may exist for other years but I have yet to find any. Pin badges were also produced for the Convention and I found a 1914 example of that too.
I have not been able to ascertain the convention venue as yet.

STAMP OF HONOUR ! THE HENDON FOUR FIGHTER FUND, 1940. A rather large and very unusual Cinderella landed on my desk yesterday. It is a fund-raising stamp that helped to buy 4 spitfire fighter planes for use in the Battle of Britain. Here is a nice story about it from OtterPatrol at BBC's WW2 People's War website [an archived posting]. It concerns a certain civilian named Maurice Rowlandson. "I was just 16 years of age when the Borough of Hendon established its 'Four Fighter Fund'. It aimed at raising funds to buy four Spitfire Fighters to help in the Battle of Britain. Many and varied efforts were made to raise the money needed. One of these was a 'charity shop' opened by a Mrs Forrester - a classic 'do-gooder'! When the shop opened I volunteered my services to Mrs Forrester, and throughout the fund-raising effort (which, ultimately, was successful) I spent every free moment working in the shop - or running errands for Mrs Forrester. It was totally asorbing and I involved my boy scout troop in the efforts. When the fund concluded and we were able to present a cheque to the Ministry of Defence for the four fighters, the local Mayor gave a reception for all of those involved in the effort. Mrs Forrester was kind enough to say that the success of the shop at Mill Hill was, in a large measure, due to the commitment that I had put in. Unbeknown to me, the Mayor had advance warning of that and he presented me with a commemorative plaque recalling the part I had played in buying the four fighters. It was a significant moment in my life, and one to which I always look back to with happy memories." Most unusually and very surprisingly, I was the only bidder on this label. At 99p it was an absolute bargain, especially given the story of it's use. A beauty. Londonbus1........not a beauty !
