Here's my latest acquisition in my constant search for postmarks from my hometown of Peterborough, Ontario. We've got a CDS duplex hammer strike on the 2-cent purple Queen Victora, numeral issue. Sent from the Times Printing Company in Peterborough to Toronto. The 2-cent stamp is correct single usage for the current domestic rate under Imperial Penny Postage which came into effect December 25, 1898. The cover is backstamped with a TORONTO, CANADA AP 25 99 broken circle. Funny I spent most of my life growing up in Peterborough and never heard any mention of the Times Printing Co. Even in my research of Peterborough's history I hadn't ever read anything about that company name. Guess they my not have had a big effect on the community? Anyone have any info on this company, particularly its time in Peterborough, Ontario? The cover: The backstamp:

This post illustrates the importance and pertinence of maintaining good postal standards within a countries postal regime. It also highlights the falling standards with countries like Great Britain, India and Mexico for allowing their postal machinery to decline to such a state that tons of stamps are rendered useless, and the potential of years of an areas history to be lost.
Kudos to countries like Austria, Germany the Scandinavia areas for bucking the trend, and providing their heirs to benefit from decades of good readable postmarks.

Neat little snippet, seems like the right place the Grand Trunk was the railway in the Kawarthas in the late 1800s. But, I can't access the rest of the book, so I can't see any details on the Printing Co.
