Can members Identify this Syrian overprint please? or, has Scott catalogue made a mistake? Scott 94? I make it a Stanley Gibbons type 5 surcharge. That is Scott #44, sir. Note that the overprint on the catalog image that you posted is on three lines. The overprint on your stamp is 4 lines. Here's what Scott has to say: When the overprint is four lines, it is #44. That would be yours, apparently. Both #44 and #94 are from 1921, according to Scott.

AirmailEdThanks Ed. Thank you for you time in organising the scans. I have realised the hiccup arrived between the layout of Steiner and Scott, usually the Scott regime is followed closely. Steiner's page for the small format stamps and double are each afforded a page breaking up the 4 line and 3 line opts, and setting them on 1 page. #44 it is.

That probably makes a better looking page. I'm a stickler for proper order by date. Scott (and Sanabria, to a lesser degree) often lump together stamps from the same set but different dates. I dismantle those sets and mount them in proper order by date. In some cases, like Paraguay's airmails, Scott numbers are all over the place in my albums. Whoever buys my collection when I croak will have an adventure reassembling those sets.

You, along with Stoltzpup, BC, and others, have some beautiful pages.
As a worldwide collector, and working with second hand mounts, I have to be less particular getting the stamps protected and mounted is the main focus. I really enjoy the mostly seamless marriage of Scott and Steiner, so I can forgive the occasional hiccup.
Having worked for 5-7 years with Stanley Gibbons, Scott is a breath of fresh air, I like the way they lump like issues together. With Gibbons, one was constantly searching and flicking through pages, ugh! that was horrible.

1923 Syrie Grand Liban The following article was first published in “Stanley Gibbons Monthly Journal”, September 1927
In 1923 the stamps of France 1900-1921 were overprinted “SYRIE-GRAND LIBAN,” for use in all parts of Syria. In the early part of 1924 the same issue of French stamps (1900-1921) were overprinted “SYRIE,” while in Western Syria, henceforth known as Grand Liban, the same stamps were overprinted “GRAND LIBAN.”
In the latter part of 1924 a new issue for Alaouites came out separately. Previously this district of Syria used the postage stamps of Syria. At this time also the stamps of France were overprinted and surcharged in Arabic as well as French. The stamps of Great Lebanon and Syria also received this bi-lingual overprint. On January 1st, 1925, the present Pictorial set was issued, consisting of one set for Syria and another for Great Lebanon. There were thirteen values from 10 centiemes to 25 Piastres, four Air Mail stamps, and five Postage Dues. The stamps were designed by J. de la Néziére and printed in France by the Helio Vaugirard. The set for Alaouites consists of Syrian current stamps overprinted bi-lingually.

1926-1930 Surcharges (Due to the fall of the Syrian currency, which was linked to the franc) Missing 20 piastre on 1.25 piastre, surprising CV is only $2, when only 30,000 were printed (Other issues around 200,000) Note: The 4 piastre on 25c olive black, comes in 3 varieties, red opt, 4p with flat foot, 4p with sloping foot, [also Arabic script differs]

On November 8, 1957, Syria issued this set of three lithographed, perf. 11.5 stamps to commemorate a glider festival (Scott 416-418). This set was acquired from one of bobby1948 's generous giveaways.
