In comparing the various catalogues over a long span of years I have come to the conclusion there is little agreement among the "experts" much beyond denominations and base color.... I can see why many just collect "one of each". I have found where details/descriptions just disappear, and other instances (not as frequent) where something is added, and seldom if ever is there any explanation, but, it does remain civil as I've found no instance of one 'expert" demeaning" another

For Fance, Marianne is the embodiment of the aims of the Republic and the rooster apparently symbolized bravery and courage down the centuries - outside of these emblems, the other well know series of stamps issued by France are the 'Arms/Heraldic' images - with separate depictions for various departments/regions. There have been just a few posted here - as issues included with other yearly groups/values - but thought I'd just show a few that have come my way, though I haven't collected any deliberately - they make for a colourful arrangement - does anyone know if you can buy wallpaper like this?? Sorry the post is rather non-academic - France has taken a back seat completely whilst I've been tinkering with U.K. - the Commonwealth - N.Z. - Oz - Egypt - and various other places - I seriously didn't know there were that many countries in the world - think if I'd known I'd have collected something else;-). These issues appear to have started back in 1941 and whilst absent during a handful of years, they look to have ceased c. 1966 though there seems to be an issue for 1972. Initially, they looked nothing like those posted here, and coloured examples don't seem to appear until 1943 but from then on they mostly appear as the bright examples here, and catalogue wise, they fall within the Michael range 585 - 1570. Some of the early issues may well be difficult to source - quantities printed vary enormously from c. one million for some early issues up to a staggering c. eleven hundred million for later ones. Appreciate the serious collectors here may find errors in my post - please correct with gratitude - otherwise hope these brighten an rather hot, sticky, sultry, stormy sweaty afternoon.

thanks 'stainlessb' - Stanley, and appreciate the offer to increase my knowledge of these things .. think for the moment I'll continue to side line them whilst I go off in other directions. I know I collect too many countries, but it' difficult not to at times. I think my next project for France will probably be the pictorials. thanks again.

Thanks oskar1 I almost gave up on the map idea as my initial efforts to highlight the province was almost an entire day of frustration. Fortunately a good nights sleep and I was able to come up with a way that worked (several maps later....)

René renden ... damn (thanks, but still damn...) luckily only 4 stamps/mounts.... today it's only supposed to be 109ºF yesterday's 116F broke all records for 'these here parts'. My garden was almost done... now, even the remaining peppers are hot (today smoking poblamos -> ancho and jalapeno-> chipoltle out side) leaves a lot of time for stamps!

Here are the 3rd series of Province Coat of Arms/Crests. The first two series are not hugely common, based on accumulations over the yaers, several of the earlier stamps I had but one copy, and one I had to specifically purchase. The 3rd series is much more plentiful, and it also has a number of variants. I don't know if it wa sa new printer, or a result of post war issues. Prior to the Coat of Arms series, most stamp issues were monotone. The 4th series started in 1949 and appears to have many of the same issues The color registration appears to have been problematic , and much more noticeable (IMHO) than the Merson issues with the one 'accent color' in the garden. The two pages will face each other

corrected post I realized there were two more stamps associated with the bust of Petain. The earlier 1944 commemorative and semi-postals. I have the missing stamp somewhere...(several actually... must be mis-filed....) The scan doesn't show the color variations as well as they look under natural light... the paper also looks liek iot may be slightly different- all are MNH renden s post below pertains to one of the stamps just prior to the release of the Petain issues. I'll have an ammended page including that stamp (and others ) shortly

Edit/update: Image has been replaced... i completely missed one stamp (Yvert 309)... while I may not have all the stamps, atleast now on this page, there is a place for all! Returning to the before/after Bust of Petain stamps (and I found the one I couldn't find earlier!), A couple of color varieties thyat may prove challenging to fing, but otherwise....progress!

Edit :The last issues of 1944 (commemorative and semi-postals) 618 - 619, and then to 661-668 (definitives in-between, shown elsewhere)I omitted the Designer & Engravers for the Cathedral series, and after trying to edit the original sheet, I opted to divide into two separate pages....

Hi All- I've really fallen down a rabbit hole with these- spent an evening organizing various stamps from 1944-1948 in an album (I splurged and bought the Davo album, vol. 1). I know these are pretty mundane but it was a lot of fun looking at them, especially with a magnifying glass- they're real art pieces and there's a lot of detail that's easily missed. And some interesting history lessons. Way too much fun! OK, I have a couple of really elementary questions (forgive me, please). First, is there any impact of the stamp still having a tag (I don't know the terminology) attached like this: Also, I notice that with some stamps, the perforations come really close to one edge. Any issue or just someone at the printing plant not paying attention?

What I collect: I collect world wide up to 1965 with several specialty albums added due to volume of material I have acquired. At this point I am focused on Canada and British America. I am always on the lookout for stamps and covers with postmarks from communities in Queens County, Nova Scotia. I do list various goods including stamps occasionally on eBay as hdm50

oskar1 On your first stamp that is known as selvedge edge. It has been debated on the forum whether it should be kept or removed. If there is printing or markings on it I for sure keep it. Plain like on yours I would be tempted to remove it. The danger is that you could pull some of the perfs or tear the stamp. On the second stamp, they are graded higher if they have perfect centering. Hope that helps you.

I agree with hdm1950 lacking any printing in the selvedge, the only possible plus it it lets us know it was from the right side of the sheet. If you were collecting position this might be important, but otherwise no real 'value" is added. Some have suggested folding in back and under so the uniformity and symmetry of your mounts is maintained (in your photo, with the selvedge it doesn't fit within the printed frame, and as a result the stamp itself is off-center (However, IMHO folding under is a bad idea for mint stamps as you risk just enough humidity to stick the gummed sides together. ) If you want to remove the selvedge I have found either by placing a straight-edge over the perforation and folding in order to start a crease, then back fold and it should come apart evenly. OR For for the brave at heart (and sharp-eyed) you could also cut it off, but your only as good as your aim LOL A nicely centered stamp can have more value.. but also a Mint Never Hinged (MNH) will tend to have more value than one that has been hinged. Having said all this- it is your collection so it is really a matter of preference on your part!

Selvedge...should have thought of that having worked in the fashion industry for a number of years! Considering the relatively low cost of these stamps, I'm not too stressed over it but I thought it was an interesting issue. I have a few more "years" on order from a dealer in France so I'll be busy. I think the album will in the end will have cost WAY more than the stamps themselves but it's all good. There's just a few gaps to fill. And I broke down and ordered the Yvert & Tellier catalog- Scott doesn't have a lot of detail. Now my French will get some practice.
