Serbia The "Death Mask" stamp. This was found by me, amongst a suitcase of junk at a stamp auction. It reads ..."The recent assasination...." which kinda dates the piece, but I meet it with healthy scepticism. For your perusal. (Our member Jim -jkblue- may have more info on this) There is one interesting postcript to the Mouchon story. One of his last commissions was for Servia, and provided a head of King Alexander I. Following success with that, he was given a double portrait to engrave, showing Karageorgevich and Peter I, in a montage effect. What follows cannot be substantiated, but is generally regarded as authentic. When the stamps were delivered, it was found that the design showed a "ghost" face between the monarchs, the details provided by the lines of engraving in the double portrait. This is supposed to be the deathmask of a young king who was murdered along the way, and is claimed to have been arranged by his mother, Dowager Queen Natalie, with the connivance, of course, of the engraver. Mouchon indignantly denied any complicity, but (it is said) was so upset by the accusation thar he refused any further stamp engraving commissions.

Grungy, but still well loved. 1890 1911 "Thick wove paper" ? I didn't get that impression with these, perhaps re-prints? counterfeits? (Note: Serbia 1920 has great examples of (almost transparent) "Pelure" paper stamps.)

Serbia German Occupied by Serbia By our esteemed PostmasterGS member (Image posted with permission) ...I don't see from photo, date of this posting, as there is mentioned Michel catalog prices, it must be long time back. I have latest issue of same catalog, where this set (#46/48) in mnh have catalog value of 6.50 euro, and plate flaw not mentioned at all. Even sheet of two are down with prices, where perforated (Bl. 1) and no perforation (Bl. 2) have 150.00 euro each. I go further, searching some sales offerings, around web, and see really very-very different prices for offered material, which can reach even 200% up of Michel catalog. Something that surprised me well, because last two years, there was lot of material offered for sale (offers coming from Serbia), and prices was going down.

Going trough my old Serbian stamps. Funn to find so much colour difference on this stamps. Here are the 1894 King Alexander I 10 Serbian para. Perf comb13 x 13½ and line11½. And now that I look at them in this size I see that there are diferent papar! With and without silk treads. The three last on bottom line is not 36B from 1894, they are Mi 45B from 1896! Well I learn and I learn and learn, learn ....
