I have bad habit of leaving mounts just piled about while I work and wind up with a hundred or so loose strips and cut pieces laying about. Is there a way you use to file the pieces?? I bought a couple desk top little plastic basket things and am in the process of sorting them into them.I made simple paper folds with mounts number and am sticking them into the folds. It is organized for the moment but can tell it isn't going to work for long.Any thoughts or system you use??Open to ideas.

Like you I have been having the same problem. I been saving good used mounts for some time and was just throwing them in a container, I spend more time looking for a certain size mount than its worth.
I had a moment of pure genius I took a old stock book and started to use that to house my mounts, works great. Start with little and progress to large, when I need a mount I just open up the stock book and grab a mount. It also helps to keep them flat.

On unused mounts I cut the top off of each package of strips and return any usable remainder of a strip to the package after cutting. I place used mounts of all sizes in a gallon sized ziplock bag. I store the mounts, guillotine cutter, hinges and glassines in a plastic shoe box.

Steve that's the way Mom taught me but I failed on that one.Kirk I think that will work if I can find some drawers that will fit in my space.I think stockbook would start to bulge maybe break binding?? I try to save any mounts that MIGHT be usable hence the problem hundreds of smaller pieces with no organization, just a pile.I'm going shopping now just to see what's out there.

No go on the drawer units I found, just not deep enough average just over six inches and mount strips are over eight.Amazing how limited the variety, went to Lowes and Walmart, maybe I'll make it somewhere else tomorrow. Something that should be easy never is, Kilroy's law.

If your storage container doesn't need to have a cover, perhaps a silverware tray will work.

I have been using mounts for about 3 months now, just received another few Kilos from Canada, I use second hand mounts because I have to budget, A lot of my pages can be seen with not so square cuts, but I am happy as to what appears on the album page, and the stamps are protected.
I keep all my part boxes of mounts in their dedicated packages, in a cardboard box by my desk The loose mounts I separate into horizontal strips and the deeper I call vertical strips in 2 light plastic Chinese Takeaway boxes (new) which I use for otherwise for storing meals and rice in the deep freeze after cooking.
When I have a page to mount, I lay out the stamps on the page, and sift through the boxes to find suitable size mounts that best fit, cut them to size, then attach after they are all fitted and pared to size.
When the boxes start to empty, I grab a handful of bits and pieces from the 5-10 Kilos I have, and refill.
The light boxes are easy to have on hand around the desktop.

Hi
I use stackable plastic drawers that I purchased at an office supply. Unfortunately they don'y make the drawers I purchased anymore. However, for a friend I was able to locate letter size stackable storage drawers at an art supply store. Also, Showgard used to make a storage drawer system that incorporated 3 stackable drawers and a mount package organizer (not sure how useful that is). I am not sure they still make it, but check it out. The drawer size I have is approximately 9 x 11-1/2 and 1-1/2 deep.
I also open the mount package at the top and "strip" away about 1 inch of the top paper. I save a cardboard liner from a used up package and sandwich the mounts between the cardboard strips. To put pieces back I pull out the entire mount strips, put in the pieces and sandwich between the cardboard strips and re-insert in the packaging.
That is for Showgard and possibly Hawid. The Scott mount package is different. You can "pop open" the package and "reseal it" after you are done.
For my mounts I have three drawers allocated for storage, one for small mounts, one for medium mounts and one for large mounts. As long as the drawers are for 8-1/2 x 11 the mounts will fit. However, I had to buy some extra large mounts and I have to keep those on top of the drawers.
Lastly, it may take a bit of searching the internet to find them but they are out there.

Try a sports store say bass pro and look at fishing tackle boxes. The have systems that you can insert trays, these trays can be bought separately. I have seen trays that allow you to rearrange the compartment. I was looking at a friends last summer and was able to arrange a tray to hold 12 inch lures, I have a look around and see what I can find.

I have worked out a temporary solution,The little baskets I found at dollar store are just long enough to hold the large size envelopes(9 1/2 inch).By folding over and gluing to itself, about half of the flap of these envelopes it makes a label area to write the size of the mount on and file in ascending order in the baskets.Total investment was three dollars. Not perfect but until I find better it will work. The biggest pain is measuring each piece that's laying about and filing into the right envelope.Maybe when the weather is better I'll play with some wood in the shop right now just too cold.Keep throwing out the ideas though it makes me think of solutions.

The KISS system.Could be simply improved by gluing envelopes to stiffer cardboard we'll see.

Responses from collectors, who for one reason or another, have surplus mounts removed from previous use on album pages, some are lightly hinged, others are sundry bits and pieces.
I advertised for purchase, and received Kilograms from dealers etc, that have them hanging around. The last lot I received from Canada was free, I just had to pay for the shipping.
They just come in a shoebox, not sorted, in all sorts of sizes and formats up to 1/2 page. I only use Hawid "open at the top" Black, and "Scott" which I cut in half to use as "open top"

I have my mounts in a cigar box. I also cut the top of the package and replace the mount in the package. I have them by size, with the largest at the bottom.
This got me to thinking, I have the fishing trays (several of them) that I could make one of them a mount holder. Dust will not get in them and it can still be easily stored.
Now what about all the glassines? How do you store them? Similar way? Envelope, cigar box, fishing box? Any ideas?

As my glassines only number in the hundreds I keep them handy in an old shoe box which leaves enough room to rummage for right size.I find it funny spell check doesn't like glassines.

I keep each size in a separate envelope. When I have a remnant I put it in the envelope holding the closest size. I keep a separate envelope for the "extras" that just don't live up with any of the traditional sizes. I also use clear mounts so if I don't have to worry about them going past the boxes on the page.

Thanks Poodle Mum,I developed bad habits over the years this is one.I cut a mount, leave the piece laying about thinking next stamp will also need this size. When it doesn't I fish out another mount without ever putting first away.Multiply this over the course of an hour and my stamp table is a true mess.Add to that the pieces I rescue from re-mounting something into a better fit mount and the bits and pieces that seem to magically appear...presto big mess. Now we get into the real messy part.I have taken to using glue stick on every mount. The area I use to apply the glue to mount quickly becomes a sticky mess. Now I have clutter and stickyness too. My wife would say typical man mess. You can imagine what I do with the bulldozer. If it ain't rocks it's mud here in the mountains.

Hi I use No. 2 glassines almost exclusively. For those glassines with stamps I found that Business Card file boxes are perfect containers: Card FileEmpty glassines are stored in the box they came in. For other than No 2, those are just in a plastic stacking drawer. Look at the office supply stores. Jerry B

Well I'm glad I'm not the only one with this problem. I use a small cardboard box with home made dividers and it's a mixed up mess, putting it mildly. I spend way to much time looking for suitable size mounts in my left over piles of scrap mounts.

firstfrog you said spellcheck doesn't like glassines. I kno wut yew meen. Just add it to the dictionary. I do that with a lot of words spellcheck doesn't like. That solves that problem.

I have a bad habit of cutting off part of the strip and then not putting the rest away. Or I'll get down to the end of a strip and have a portion left over. At the end of the day I will put the long strip back into its original holder (if I can remember the size). For the smaller portions I use a plastic storage bin that I bought at a craft store. You can usually find them in any craft store. You can also find ones with adjustable tabs.
