I hope that other members can share their Maltese cross cancels and we be able to build a data base for future students, By the way I in grade 1 and have a D average. At least you be passing! Numbered Maltese Cross cancels were used in the London Head Office from mid-March 1843 and into 1844. The numbers 1-12 are known. All EXCEPT #3 have an additional small cross at the top of the Maltese Cross cancel. These are not listed in the Scott Standard catalogs, but are listed in the Scott Classic Specialized catalog. Here is #12, stamp ain't pretty but the number is clear:

From what I can gather the Numbered Maltese Cross cancels which were issued at the London chief office were the fore runner to the barrel cancels. It allowed some form of identification to the cancel. They were issued in March 1843 as khj said all but the 3 had a cross, this was probally added to stop confusion with 2 being a 5 or a 6 being a 9. Interesting read on the introduction of them is here philately.ttrr.org/gb/mx_numbers/mxnum_p00.html
I trying to collect all 12 cancels, once in a while one pops that I will bid on.

I think it's pretty. It's genuine, possibly cut in a dimly lit Post Office, it's carried out its duty, and has a smashing postmark Lovely. Sadly, my guess it was one of a pair, going by the "nice" cut lines adjacent to top and RHS, the second Maltese, half missing would suggest that it had a sister next door.

Agreed. It most likely had another stamp to the right while it was on cover. Too late now.
I have a couple more other numbers. I'll post those if I can (ever) find where I put them!
