Originally intended as the design for the 1930 health stamps, the issue was plagued by problems from the beginning. The 1d plates were prepared in London by the Royal Mint. When they arrived in New Zealand it was discovered that the vertical spacing between stamps did not allow sufficient clearance for the comb perforation machine. The plates were cut and metal spacers were inserted but the end result was stamps that were quite often poorly spaced. The set was issued at the height of the Great Depression (1929-39) which affected sales. The stamps were printed by typography (letterpress), and are in superb mint unhinged condition. The very faint light spot on the reverse of the 2d Blue was from a faulty scanner since replaced. Obverse Reverse

Nice examples Robert. ASC currently catalogue MUH at $525 NZD.
For anyone in need, I am currently based in New Zealand and can sometimes source smiling boys at more realistic prices.

Hi Bas S Warwick
Sorry for this very long wait, I didn't even know you had responded, didn't get any email notification, I only happened to look now to find your response. It would be good if people can have access to a reasonably priced 1931 smiling boys health set, It also needs to be noted that the condition of the stamp is paramount. My set is recorded as being superbly centred and fresh, without any faults, perfect perforations and fresh original gum. It is a rare find and seldom seen in this condition, so it will attract a big premium, and premium stamps will cost the buyer lots of money.
Lower condition will attract lower value, for instance a set for sale now from a specialist dealer in mint lightly hinged condition and reasonably centred for $175. and the blue stamp in superb condition with fluffy perforations for $285.00; used condition normally are valued at the same cost to the mint lightly hinged.
I am familiar with NZ catalogues referring to this particular stamp, they cater for average condition mint unhinged stamps, but the price of NZ stamps in Australia are sometimes lower than NZ catalogue prices and sometimes higher; the stamps I have shown are in a league of their own and are valued much than the NZ$525 each.
Good luck in finding the 1931 smiling boys at a price easy to access by collectors; but to sell a set like mine at what you say at a more realistic price would be impossible.
Rob

What I collect: I collect world wide up to 1965 with several specialty albums added due to volume of material I have acquired. At this point I am focused on Canada and British America. I am always on the lookout for stamps and covers with postmarks from communities in Queens County, Nova Scotia. I do list various goods including stamps occasionally on eBay as hdm50

Very nice they are too hdm1950. Well done You are quite right about the mass of fakes (replicas) out there being sold as genuine. Yours above look right. Nice fresh white 'chalk surfaced' paper. Crisp artwork. Hopefully they have nice clean backs too. These below are fakes I copied off the internet some years ago. Slightly creamy paper. Fuzzy detail in the artwork. Buyers beware! Dave

DK Below is a scan of the back of my pair Dave. There is a small hinge remnant on the bottom left of the 2d that I will leave alone. I had been bidding on a nice used pair on eBay last week until I looked closer and thought I saw a crease in one. When I messaged the seller he was glad I did as he had some how missed the crease. He was okay with me canceling my bid but by the time I went to do so I was outbid. I stayed away from bidding on mint ones on eBay. This pair was bought from the local auction house I deal with all the time. I pay a bit more there as a rule but I trust them totally.
