Another cover recently acquired I've been doing a little quick research on tonight. I'll share what I've found so far, before I toddle off to bed. The cover, with letter intact is addressed to Eleanor (Nelly) Schley, daughter of a prominent Milwaukee lawyer Charles Schley. Nelly was born in 1851 and died in 1942. The Schley family lived in what is called the James S. Brown Double House, which they purchased in 1872. Here's an image of the house the letter would have arrived at. I believe the Shley's lived in the north half of the house.
The cover sports a green 3ยข Washington stamp. The Richmond VA cancel doesn't have a year (badly inked) but the letter is dated Thursday April 3. A perpetual calendar tells me it may be 1873 or 1879. A closer look at the stamp later may narrow that down. Here's the cover...a little worse for wear. And the letter shows some criss cross writing on the first page. So there's a taste. I'll update the thread as I delve deeper into it. Nighty night.

It would be prior to 1879 as by then the US Post Office Department required a dated cancel and a dated received cancel on all mail.

Good to know Smauggie, thanks. There's nothing on the back of the envelope, no receiver cancels, so that narrows it down considerably.

I should amend what I said. Not on all mail, but on all First Class and Registered mails.

thanks to Smauggie for helping me narrow this one down. The resulting album page. Sounds like Nelly was quite the character.
