Stamp Insider for January–February 2017The January–February 2017 issue of the Stamp Insider, journal of the Federation of New York Philatelic Societies, is online and available for free download in PDF format or viewing online with page turning. It is available in both PDF and HTML5-friendly format at: www.stampinsider.orgThe lead story — Chasing the Trail of John Butterfield — explores the life and business relations of the contractor of the southern Overland Mail route from 1858–1861. The featured video by the Associated Press shows a 150th anniversary reënactment in 2008. Other articles include “The Stamp-Album World,” a humorous essay from Stephen Leacock’s Short Circuits, published in 1928; Lloyd de Vries report on the opening of the APRL’s new home; and a short item on the importance of checking backstamps on covers that might otherwise be overlooked. Columns include a book review by Alan Warren of the sixth edition of Martin L. Severe’s The Comprehensive Listing of ArtCraft Covers: Their Varieties and Vales 1923–2015. This covers the entire output of more than 25 thousand covers by the Washington Stamp Exchange, later known as the Washington Press. The “Via Airmail” and “New Deal Philately” columns explore US airmail letter sheets — the first on the John F. Kennedy issues of 1965 and 1967 and the latter on a stillborn 1934 proposal. The first issue was a ten-cent sheet in 1947. -30-
