Well, Anping, I thought that you of all people would like to see a photo of this HK rarity, since its postmark bears your site name prominently. This stamp, Hong Kong, Scott #LAP6, has a special catalogue number due to its use at Anping. This item is being offered at a live auction at the upcoming Westpex Stamp Show in San Francisco, California from 27-29 April. Current Scott Catalogue Value is US $1,900.

Thanks for posting that. Anping is the port for Tainan on Formosa. Only six definitives were ever used from there, all sold from the a British vice-consulate; this being the top value.
These are very scarce postmarks. The one shown is an absolute gem. I do have just one myself, but not a full strike.
That auction item should be hotly contested, and I would be surprised if the hammer price does not exceed estimate.

Thanks to you (and others on TSF), I have started to pay much closer attention to details like postmarks and specialized collecting interests, some things which I never really gave their due in the past. When I saw this auction advertisement in Linn's Stamp News, I initially started to look at it because the auction will take place at Westpex, which I will be attending later this month (not that I can afford any of this rare material!). Anyway, the Anping postmark caught my attention, and I couldn't resist sharing it on TSF.

Postmark collection of Hong Kong, Treaty Ports, foreign arrival marks, shipping marks and instructional and directional markings are the new vogue. Prices are increasing too rapidly for my taste. I think years ago these markings were collected mainly by those who couldn't afford the colony's high value stamps. Now it has turned on its head. Here's one from my reference library, which sold on eBay for around £285 a couple of months ago. This is a dual language directional marking for Cheribon (north west Java). EDIT: The stamp can be picked up for about 50 cents.

These are very scarce postmarks. Interesting.... Just for information, I checked the 2000 Scott Classic Catalogue, and it happens that the none of the Anping-postmarked stamps were even listed back then. Fast forwarding back to the present, without the Anping postmark, this same stamp is HK, Scott #53, and it is valued at US $45. in used condition, which is a huge difference compared to the US $1900. for #LAP6. What it tells me is that it would probably be worthwhile to check dealer stocks for used copies of HK Scott #53, and take a close look at the postmarks to see if any of them are from Anping, but have gone unnoticed for that. I will start doing some hunting, I think!

They are surprisingly hard to find - I have 2 in my collection, one picked up for not much as the dealer had not noticed it/checked it properly amongst his stock...
