Middle Congo is located in central Africa – the current Congo Brazzaville. In 1910 Middle Congo, formerly a part of French Congo, was declared a separate colony. It was grouped with Gabon and the Ubangi-Shari and Chad Territories and officially designated French Equatorial Africa. This group became a single administrative unit in 1934. 1927 Scott # 58

I learned a thing or five from this excellent YouTube video from the France and Colonies Philatelic Society president, Ken Nilsestuen on the French Congo pictorial issue of 1900: With knowledge like that, I'll be joining the FCPS as soon as possible

The French Congo stamp on the left has some interesting stuff going on. It is the "truncated tusk" variety (Sc 37b (type II), Yt 29c), but also looks like some doubling of the red is present - particularly noticeable in the top tusk lines and the back of the leopard. Normal on right for comparison. No mention of a double impression in Yvert or Maury for this value that I can see, but I'm not very familiar with the details on this issue.
Thoughts? ~Greg

Hi greg There is obvious doubling on certain parts of the left stamp as my pics below show.
BUT what i have noticed is that both those stamps are printed on different papers..Look at the texture differences..

Thank you Robert for the detail pics - Yes, there's definitely a difference in paper - the one on the right is much thicker (sorry, should have mentioned that earlier!). There's also a thin paper variety of which I have a copy somewhere.

French Middle Congo 1907-1933, the Collection The French Congo (French: Congo français) or Middle Congo (French: Moyen-Congo) was a French colony which at one time comprised the present-day area of the Republic of the Congo and parts of Gabon, and the Central African Republic. In 1910, it was made part of the larger French Equatorial Africa.
Modern Republic of the Congo is considered French Congo's successor state, having virtually identical borders, and having inherited rights to sovereignty and independence from France through the dissolution of French Equatorial Africa in the late 1950s.
"From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia"
The following pages show the complete set of stamps issued while the French Middle Congo was a French Colony. Not included are any of the inverted or missing surcharge types.
The stamps shown are mostly Mint Never Hinged with some Hinged where MNH examples weren't available. Finding examples with pristine gum wasn't always possible with these issues due to the harsh tropical conditions of temperature and moisture. All of these examples have intact gum but there is quite a range of discoloration in gum tones running from off-white to light brown.
Some of the papers used for the Postage Dues are especially noteworthy, almost fluorescent greens, oranges and blues. Gabon also used similar papers for a few of their Postage Dues.
A few comments about the album pages.
I purchased a set of pages for several of the French African Colonies from STAMPEXTRAS07 (Portugal) on eBay. They come pre-printed and un-punched on heavy glossy stock. You have a choice of either black framed color images of the stamps or a blank frame. Unfortunately, I chose the style with the images printed in color. A drawback, I found, was the pages looking complete even if there are missing stamps. In retrospect, I would order blank frames in the future.
The handwork involved in mounting the stamps on these pages is huge, at least when I do it my way, cutting Showgard strips and trying my level best to get them straight. After awhile, I started asking myself if the cost of the mounts was exceeding the cost of the stamps (LOL)...
Since purchasing these pages, I've discovered Palo Country/Colony Albums. They offer Hinge-less albums for all of the British and French colonies. I recently purchased pages for Nyasaland, Basutoland, Bechuanaland Protectorate, Northern Rhodesia and the Falkland Dependencies. I really like them so far. I hope to post some of them in the near future.

Very nice collection with good centering - often a challenge with the early issues of the colonies!
I have used the Palo pages for my French Africa collection, and have been quite happy with them overall. Got the hingeless with black & white images. (FYI in the process of downsizing & selling off my collection - keeping only some of the common design - I mention this as I will be selling my pages/binders too in a month or so).

Thank you for the kind comments Greg. I really appreciate them.
I'm downsizing as well, I'm too old with too many stamps. If I don't channel them while I can, my kids will sell them for 10 cents a pound at the end of the driveway when I'm gone ....

I hear you! Gone from collecting worldwide up to 1959, to about 30 countries/colonies, now to just Canada & French Morocco, and even thinking of cutting that down further... In my case at least, my son knows he will inherit them - and actually has something of an interest.

René Thanks for the kind words, René. I'll definitely have some duplicates after this haul! I fell in love with this set when I rebooted my collecting in 2020, and its arguably one of the first topical sets created. Then Ken Nilsestuen of the FCPS did a series of articles (no. 341 specifically), that covered this set in-depth. To the broader forum audience, if you're a fan of this stuff, the FCPS is a screaming deal at $15 per year: Membership Older issues of the newsletter are available here (sorry, if you want the newer stuff, join up!): The Philatelist (Newsletter of the FCPS)
