Here's an RPO dial that is on the back of an envelope I have which was mailed form Detroit in 1899. It's just barely visible on the cover, so I've enhanced it as best I could. I think I can make out MICH VIA DETROIT R.P.O., but not the first part. Any ideas?

James, Here is a LINK to a Michigan Railway map (circa 1900). I tried to find a possible match for a town or city ending in ...BAR, but was unsuccessful. Maybe it will help. Bobby

I think butterfly has it! "Grand Rap." fits perfectly and now that I look closer, the last part does indeed look like "RAP.". And Grand Rapids is on a Detroit railway spur.

How about Grand Rapids, Mich. (GRAND RAP.) I also agree that I think the first part probably is GRAND RAP. --Well done, Andrew ( butterfly). But I also wonder if the RPO portion says DETROIT. To me, it looks like DET & CHI R.P.O. rather than DETROIT Any other thoughts??

What's the definition of genius? YOU GUYS!!! In fact, Butterfly and mikeclevenger, the letter was sent to Grand Rapids. And I think you are correct BG, now that you say it, I think I see Det. & Chi. as well. What a great team. I knew I could count on this bunch. Thanks!

See, someone always comes up with an answer here. It may take several people with different ideas, but between us all, we always come up with an answer. LOL.

The black-and-white image really brings out the lettering, Nelson, thanks for adding this! And glad to know that it looks like we were on the right track, too, although it seems we could have made it easier on ourselves!

Agreed! the black and white image helps. Thanks Nelson. Definitely Detroit & Chicago RPO. Part of Michigan Central (according to U.S. Route and Station Agent Postmarks, C.L. Towle, Mobile Post Office Society 1986) This album page will write itself (kinda)
