The Bailiwick of Guernsey is a group of islands (called Guernsey, Alderney, Sark, Herm, Jethou, Brecqhou and Lihou) \ within the Channel Islands.
Guernsey The 3d lilac stamp, designed by Eric A. Pipreil, shows the royal portrait with the crown of William the Conqueror and a Guernsey lily, (Nerine sarniemis), below of it. The 2.5d red stamp was in a similar design with the royal portrait between the two emblems. £5 value tablet Sc# 203A 1981
The artwork was prepared in Switzerland by the printer, Helio Courvoisier. The original conception for the stamp lies with one of our Board members, Mr. N, R, H. J. Wheadon;
Guernsey designer, Robert Reed, then produced a number of rough sketches and colour combinations for the guidance of the Courvoisier studio. Collectors will be familiar with the stamp's centrepiece, the Seal of the Bailiwick, since it has featured in several previous sets. It was during the reign of Edward I (1239-1307) that a Seal was provided to avoid the need to send legal documents from the Islands to England.
The attractive scroll work is intended to suggest the waves and the fishes surrounding the islands surmounted by the motif of the Guernsey Lily sprouting at the top. It is appropriate that one of the Europa stamps features the legend surrounding the adoption of the island's flower. The new definitive measures 29 x 48.2 mm and is perforated 11.75 x 11.5. Courvoisier's normal paper incorporating silk threads has been used in the photogravure process and the sheets comprise two panes of twenty-five stamps, separated by a gutter.
