WERT - Robert - very interesting comment and scans. I did have difficulty between Lavender and Grey until I bought 3 85i (Unitrade) and started comparision with my 85 and Stanley Gibbons color charts are useless as these 2 colors are compared. Your impression ? Thanks René

Thanks for sharing the stamp community thread Robert; still have yet to see anyone posting a copy of the elusive Plates 5B, Position 91 version ;-)
For me, and at least one of the other collectors on that forum started collecting this issue as a youngster and I still enjoy the image today!
On a historical note, it was a seasoned collector (he collected/plated the St. Helena George V Colony Badge Stamps 1922-1937) from my local stamp club that introduced me to the idea of plating and scouring the little bits of paper for printing varieties and despite my other collecting interests, I always come back to this one...

For me René ( renden ) the colours on the map stamp can be tricky, but grey is grey and the lavender, pale lilac, or whatever you wish to call it does have that tint of colour that makes it distinguishable.

Indeed tobben63 and your posting raises an interesting question, where are all the stamps with the seas and oceans that were printed in the blue colour, i.e. pale or deep blue? Canada's Imperial Penny Postage (Scott No. 86) Postmarked Kingston - Indicia ‘4’ Feb. 22, 1899 Canada with duplex cancel & 9-bar killer (back receiving markings - London ont. Feb. 23, 1899 - ‘11’)
Despite the fact that, according to Tomlison's text, the blue shaded varieties accounted for 50% of the original printings, there is not the preponderance of them available today. Looking at any website where a number of the issues are available for purchase, the blue shaded oceans are clearly now in the minority and not available in the quantities that one would expect...

Using your earlier analysis WERT of the "Mon*" postmark (2¢ Map Stamp (Scott No. 85) Cancelled 16 December, 1898), comparing it to the Montreal cancel seen in the collection of maps that tobben63 shared as part of this thread and having seen a similar example for sale recently, I am almost certain that it is a Montreal cancel. What do you think?

Given WERT 's earlier analysis, the subsequent examples I have seen and the fact that the location is given as Canada and not a province, I am attributing the cancel on my stamp to Montreal. This is great because I do not have many cancels from Quebec in the collection and nice to add another...
Thanks for the larger image!

This has turned into a Map Stamp conquest with Scans (very hard to do) so I want you to see a few scans on my Canada classics and do not want responses.....since I did not have any questions but it is certainly very "poor" but with time and $$$$(pesos) it might evolve, since I bought # 1 (Unitrade) and some are missing (no scan) but of no importance........... Some of these are "dups", having not scan every bit One day...I will scan every one and show you better !! René

this is the common 3c. carmine-red commemorating the 25 year Silver Jubilee for H.M. George V and Queen Mary from 1935 - SG 337 - post marked at New Westminster, B.C. - part of Vancouver Regional District. But, what is the date cancellation reading - aside from the fact that it's 1936 - in the way of day and month. Looks almost as though the date machine was composed wrongly with some of the digits placed upside down?? Any thoughts?

It´s most likely a cancel,where the date was fed by hand.Here a 31 inverted.

thanks salentin - it's the word inverted that appeals to me ;-);-) - makes me think of famous stamps, where the word inverted means very high value --- I'm thinking of 'inverted Jennies'. But, seriously, am sure you are correct. thanks.
