As requested by blaamand , let's start a thread on French Libération issues. To start, two covers from Lyon. Use of Pétain stamps with a special cancellation "Lyon Libéré 2-9-44".

A different cover, this time from Paris, really more of a fund-raising tool. The stamp on the left is a standard definitive 1fr50 Pétain issue, overprinted with a thick Lorraine cross, and the Cinderella on the side is a vignette from the FFI (French Interior Forces). MLN = Mouvement de Libération Nationale.

Cover from Pornichet, a small village next to St-Nazaire, Loire-Inférieure (now Loire-Atlantique). Use of Pétain 1Fr20 stamps with a diagonal "Libération" overprint. Postmarked May 12th, 1945, as the Saint-Nazaire German garrison fought until the end of the war. Saint-Nazaire controls the mouth of the Loire river and has extensive shipyards, so was of strategic importance to the Germans for their "Wall of the Atlantic" defence system, and thus was heavily fortified and well armed. The Allies bypassed it on their way westward as they had secured other ports closer to England such as Cherbourg and Le Havre (after very heavy bombing: the only war casualties in my family were relatives who died in their home as it was bombed by the Allies in Cherbourg). So the "St-Nazaire pocket" was one of the last parts of French territory to be liberated. When the German administration in St-Nazaire ran out of stamps because they had lost contact with the fatherland, they made their own, which are still on my to-get list.

Stamps from the National Liberation Committee in Algiers. Used by the French liberation forces as they came from Algeria through Corsica and Provence heading North. The bottom 10+40 Fr issue is an Air Mail issue.

The other Algiers issues. The one on the bottom right is a Franchise Militaire (i.e. Military Post). There are three such issues, but I only have one for the moment.

5 issues from Lille. My catalog lists 19 issues in total, but only the middle one (the 1Fr50 red-brown Pétain) is known to have circulated officially. All others are categorized as non-issued. Note that all 4 other issues shown have the overprint inverted.

Four issues from Montreuil-Bellay (near Angers, Maine-et-Loire, yes Maine is a river in France, originally). The first two issues on the left are revenue stamps totally obliterated with the "Montreuil-Bellay" in white along the circumference of the circle barely readable. The right two are from the Hermès series (the Vichy France issues with the "Postes Françaises" legend instead of "République Française").

Issues from Bordeaux. Note the 3 different overprint types on the 1Fr50 issue. This is the case for all Bordeaux issues that they can be found in three variants. This is because the original Pétain stamps had been issued in sheets 10 stamps tall, and the sheets were overprinted as a whole, with the pattern of the three overprint types being 3-3-4 vertically. I have actually seen a vertical strip of ten stamps showing the whole pattern, but chose not to buy it, considering my limited budget at the time.

That must have been a hell of a time over there! I just can't imagine what was going through everyone's minds then!
My mother was a part of the celebrations in Times Square when it all ended. She said it was exhilarating as well as scary at the same time. So many people so happy that the war finally ended!

For cities in Alsace which had been incorporated into the Reich, the stamp stock to work from was German. Here are 6 issues from Haguenau, liberated on 11 December 1944.

Lesser known may be this issue, from the US to help with mail of the troops disembarking in Africa and Southern France. YT #PA15B. Eight overprints exist, depending on place of use: Algiers, Casablanca (3), Marseille, Toulon, Oran and Dakar. Pictured here is one of the Casablanca types.

Excellent Xavier. Your images are much more useful than those in my Maury catalog! I've bookmarked your thread for future reference. Thanks for sharing your knowledge. What an impressive collection you've obtained of this specialized collecting area, congratulations I only have one 'R.F' which I had previously believed to be from Lillle, but seeing your images I am getting in doubt, as it could just as well be one of the Bordeaux overprints...

Sometimes the Résistance would use stamps to claim some actions. Here is an example, with an 80c Pétain issue overwritten with the words "Explosion - Plastic - Sabotage - 1943", with the letters from the word "Sabotage" all shook up from the explosion!

Indeed, sometimes it's tough to differentiate between the various RF overprint types! But Lille always has the Lorraine cross, so they are easy to spot. Glad you liked what I could post. This is pretty much all I have at this time. If and when I make new acquisitions, I'll be sure to add them in!

There are of course other Libération and Résistance issues, as well as the France Libre issues from the French colonies. Here is a list of such issues with cross-links: The London Series: Originally issued in 1941 for most French overseas territories, including a set of Air Mail issues, then with value overprints in 1945. - Cameroun: original series and value overprints, airmail issues
- French Equatorial Africa (AEF): original series (including a colour error example), airmail issues, value overprints, Résistance overprints and surcharges [1943], Libération overprints and surcharges [1944]
- French Guiana: original series and airmail issues [1945]
- French India: original series and airmail issues
- French Oceania: original issues, value overprints and airmail issues (and a cover example here)
- French West Africa (AOF): airmail issues [1945]
- Guadeloupe: original series and airmail issues [1945]
- Madagascar: original series (a beautifully mounted set shown here), two sets of value overprints and airmail issues [1943]
- Martinique: Victor Schoelcher series and airmail issues
- New Caledonia: original series, value overprints and airmail issues
- Réunion: original series (with a background colour missing error), value overprints and airmail issues
- Somali Coast (Djibouti): original series, value overprint and airmail issues
- St-Pierre-et-Miquelon: original series and value overprints; airmail issues
- Wallis & Futuna: original series and value overprints

In 1943, the three French Maghreb countries (Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia) issued together a "Victory" issue. Unfortunately, I do not have the Morocco issue . Need to find that! Because Morocco and Tunisia were protectorates and Algeria a full-fledged French departement, they did not receive the "colonial" "London series" and continued with their own stamp issuance during the war years. So there are less France Libre related issues, although lots for supporting the troops, etc...

In 1944, the de Gaulle government issued a new colonial series on the theme of "Entraide Francaise", again featuring the RF letters and the Lorraine Cross. This series was issued in the same territories as the "London series". Note again the use of "Djibouti" instead of "Cote Française des Somalis".

De Gaulle also chose the design for the new Marianne series, known as the "Dulac". YT #682-701, issued in 1945.

The France colonial series for the 10th anniversary of the Liberation, with the dates of the three Allied landings. Aficionados of Canadian military history will surely recognize the date of 8 november 1942 as the failed attempt on Dieppe by the Canadian troops, which proved that Germany had fortified the ports to such an extent that the next landings would have to build their own harbors.

I have been working on the Petain 1.50fr issue as pictured above on the liberation cover with the De Gaulle Cinderella. Does anyone have more information on the the address codes? Below is the only information I have found so far and I'm hoping there is more out there!
Here is a pair with identical addresses, with and with out the Paris markings. I see a good number of these listed for sale, but very few on the above listing. Most likely not a complete list? The date ranges are from the 19th thru 25th Aug 1944 for the standard envelope and the 26th of Aug 1944 for the Paris envelope. The best that I have come up with for this issue is 2,000 for the Paris envelope and 24,500 for the standard envelope. Again, any more information would be greatly appreciated!!
