Hi there can you help me with this boxed cancel on this 8c pale dull orange 1865 Crown CC wmked Hong Kong stamp - where is it from - and any other details as to the purpose or a link would be appreciated. from the font style it sort of looks southern European - Italy, Spain or Portugese?? Am i in the right area?

thanks I'm not sure but I think I have seen this ore something like this before. If it says "ANK" it could be a nordic cansel meaning ANKOMMET = arrived. This is just a thought. I will look further trough catalogues and the net to see if I can find something. |

I've taken a scan of it should I see it elsewhere but checking around, including some of Anping posts, I did not find anything....yet. It was nice to get a feel for the Stamps and Postal History of Hong Kong again. It will get me in the mood for next month !! |

hkwill, I have a copy of Yang's Postage Stamp & Postal History Catalogue of Hong Kong and I looked through the special cancellation chapter at the book but came up with nothing similar. My catalog, however, is dated from 1995 when my wife and I visited Hong Kong on our first anniversary so, if anyone has a newer version of this catalog, perhaps additional special cancellations have been added. Sorry that this is not very helpful.

Thank you for your help - I looked at the link to the Spinks sale and there are a number of ANK cancels shown, so I have a Finland ANK arrival mark and looks like the numbers refer to 23rd of November. Interestingly all the items with this marking in the Spinks sale stampauctionnetwork.com/f/f1022.cfm are all in black I wonder if mine in blue has any dating possibilites - the stamp was issued 1865 and was out of commom use by the 1880's? So much for my southern European idea from the fonts etc - about as far as possible from the Med and still be in Europe.... LOL |
