There were lots of seals, labels and Government sponsored savings stamps issued to raise funds for the war effort. Countries and colonies of the British Empire issued stamps with a WAR Tax surcharge on postage. However I had not seen this label until today Stamp collectors being told that the hobby had the merit of contributing to the War Chest!

What I collect: Cinderellas and some Ephemera from Great Britain, France and Israel plus a few beautiful bits from elsewhere !! Topical interests include Flags & Judaica, the latter with an emphasis on the Jewish National Fund.

I have never seen that one before either. I do know that Hobbies were encouraged during tough war years and that Stamp collecting thrived often in darkened rooms and auction houses. Some of those auction houses charged an extra commission to go towards the War effort and obviously buyers/collectors were happy to pay. A number of Philatelic Organizations set up their own Philatelic War Fund. The Manchester Philatelic Society organized one such fund for the Boer War effort and even though the labels were poorly printed, became quite the Classics of GB peripheral items and were much sought after.
