What I collect: Worldwide - Stamps and Postmarks - not enough time...

Thought I would create this thread inspired by Jerry B saying Indeed Chile is a relief with regards to watermarks. So in lack of different watermarks to identify, collectors can challenge themselves with another interesting aspect - different orientations of the Chilean watermark. I have no specialized catalog for Chile, but just happened to notice that this watermark seems to come in any orientation, and the 'not-upright' seems no less common than the upright. In fact I found that my holdings for some denominations contained none of the normal 'upright', all my copies were sideways or inverted. Seems the printers did not worry too much about how they fed their paper into the press. Or maybe they created these varieties on purpose? So, there's a new challenge guys, finding each stamp in as many orientation as possible! Anybody else collecting the different orientations - or curious to start collecting them?

Here's a sample of my (very poor) Chile collection on personal pages. For many stamps I did not have any copy with a normal (presumably) upright watermark, so had to put in varieties instead. The stamps are orientated according to the watermark orientations: The additional varieties I simply stuck in on seperate album pages, here's an example. Again, I've inserted the stamps in accordance with their watermarks.

At least the watermark isn't forward/backward! Or is it? Double the fun if it is!

Haha, that would be even better. Honestly I didn't notice if these Chilean also come with reversed watermarks as well, didn't think of it. But it wouldn't surprise me!
Anybody is free to check their holdings and bring any examples to the table ๐

Funny I found this thread. I was just working on my Chilean album last night. Indeed, the star in shield watermark can be found in 4 different orientations on many of the early issues. I found the Chilean Philatelic Society website very helpful. Here is a link to one of the pages on the site, for the first watermarked issues. They use a numbering system to designate the different orientations. I've also used the same numbering system on my own album pages. You will notice, by looking through this site that some can be found in all 4 positions, and some in only 3, 2 or 1. www.sociedadfilatelica.cl/SOFICH_HTML/webemisiones_1900_1949/emision1928_36.htmlI made my pages based on the information in this site, since I don't have any specialized catalogs. Here are a couple examples from my collection. I also included a page with graphic illustrations showing the orientations. I'm probably going to re-do them at some point in time, for clarity. But for now, they will suffice. For some issues I've noticed that certain positions seem to be harder to find, at least going by the many duplicates I've searched through, and it isn't always the upright orientation that is the easiest to find.

spain1850 - Wow, that is brilliant information! And your pages are great Richard. Cool to see others have a liking for such studies. I didn't have such a proper reference about which stamps came with which watermark, so I couldn't make specialized pages. Wouldn't do it based on guessing. But now I need to re-do my pages for sure, like you have. And I am certainly looking forward to it, seeing your pages is a good inspiration Did you try to identify the different papers as well?

blaamand, thank you sir! I really never intended diving in even this deep. As I am working from country to country my main goal is to establish a base album that I can expand on, if necessary, at any time. I had no clue about all the wmk orientation varieties when I started working on Chile. So, between these and identifying all the 10c Bernardo O'Higgins types, I found the rabbit hole was getting pretty deep. The various paper types is something I may tackle in the future, I don't know.

Haha, yes the holes we dig for ourselves can easily get quite deep! I'm just about to resurface from another deep hole (Grand Duchy of Finland), and know exactly what you are saying. That Chile webpage has quite a detailed study of a terrifying amount of types of O'Higgins, which is just another hole. Did you manage to make sense of them all?
Concerning paper types, I didn't even know there were any for Chile, so I haven't studied the papers at all. I would need to see how easy it is to differentiate between the paper types before I consider to include them on the agenda. Some papers are just so similar that it's just a pain, at least that's how I feel.
Thanks again for the link to that Chilean page, I've already pdf'ed and saved the vital pages.
