JeffS, I don’t know if you’re aware of it, I certainly wasn’t, but, during the Great Depression, the state of Florida had citrus fruit tax stamps. Mystic Stamp Company has them available here.

A most interesting thread. "Food on stamps" is a side subject for me. I'm a food technologist and, once, I wrote a thesis on Orange juice production hygiene.
I'm uploading some stamps and postmarks showing some stamps and postmarks for your information.
The name on you Carcagente cover, Jordi Campderrós, (Barcelona, 1941) is that of a good friend of mine and one of the most respected men on Catalan philately.

coastwatcher, thank you for the post. I have a couple from Florida, and Texas as well. Here is an image of a lot I just bought which includes stamps inscribed GRAPEFRUIT as well as ORANGES and CITRUS. I have a similar with TANGERINE in the text. I particularly like the GRAPEFRUIT stamp at top with that wording obliterated in pencil and endorsed ORANGE in script.

Work on my Oranges Philately has been slow, mostly due to slow international mails. Here is a page "in progress" dealing with green-skinned oranges:

THE SWEET ORANGE And one more page, nearly complete. I think I will bring the bottom row to the top and I have another sliced orange to add to the existing middle row.

The yard on the XV century Catalan Governement Palace, in Barcelona (Catalonia) is called "Pati dels tarongers" which in our Catalan language stands for "Orange trees' yard". Oranges, are grown in Southern Catalonia. We call an orange "taronja" (oranges are "taronges") while orange tree is "taronger" to us. It seems that oranges were brought to the Iberian peninsula by the Arabs (VIII to XII centuries).
Cinderella, issued in 1933 on the Catalonia Album. It shows "Pati dels Tarongers" as it was by then. Now, as you may understand, trees have grown very much and the fruits (bitters ones, in fact) are used to make jam. The word "Generalitat", on the bottom of the cinderella, stands for "Palau de la Generalitat de Catalunya". The "Generalitat de Catalunya" is the name of our governement since 1359.

I now have two pages for the oranges of Jamaica.
I had the opportunity to purchase an old albunum b/w print of the boys picking oranges. The price was $50 and without citation of the image location. I attempted a price negotiation with no success. The photograph eventually sold at the $50 mark.

Found this rather lovely stamp while sorting Cuba, which is of Citrus Sinesis Osbeck, also known as the Valencia sweet orange. Not been able to find out why this variety was on a Cuban stamp as it appears to originate from California. Scott #1017, 1965:

While visiting Jamaica many years ago I came across a citrus fruit the locals called Ugli. As pictured here. Check it out.

Here's a quizzer, can you hazard a guess as to which country this references? If you know please simply reply "I know" (without looking it up) If you don't just take a guess. I had to look it up myself!

A recently purchased addition to my collection. I'm expanding the Grapefruit section. Grapefruit are the hybrid result of crossing a pomelo with a sweet orange. They vary in taste and appearance. This pink fruited example, grown here in Texas, marketed as Ruby Reds, will join that section of my collection as a single stamp.

oldpapercollect - the Oroville paper item arrived today. Thank you very much. I was quite pleasantly surprised when I looked at the backside to find out that this was a parking permit/pass issued by the local Chamber of Commerce and police department instructing a user that overtime parking citations would not be issued to visitors.
I haven't addressed removal of the stamp hinges on the back side yet. (edit: they removed with no problem:) )The size was a surprise, measuring about 3-1/2 inches by 6. A very welcome addition to my Oranges indeed
JeffS
Oroville is the site of what is called The Mother Orange Tree, claimed to be the oldest living orange tree in northern California.

I was inspired by my Oroville Mother Tree item and picked up a real-photo card of the tree, ca 1930s - 1940s.
Image refuses to load. Will try again in the morning.
