Since philatelia suggested it, let's start a thread on airport architecture. I had a quick pass through my collection and could find a few stamps featuring airports. Let's first put back the one that sparked interest: At their barest, airports are merely more than an air strip, like in the Polynesian islands: A basic airport will have a control tower and a small building to process passengers and cargo, like these examples from Entebbe (Uganda), Matsapa (Swaziland), Hihito (Wallis & Futuna), Miquelon and St-Pierre (SPM), or Blantyre (Malawi): Often airports are just built as utilitarian buildings, with a definitely boxy look, such as these examples from Bangui (Central African Republic), Moroni (Comoro Islands), and Libreville (Gabon): or Kamuzu International in Malawi: and Kotoka International in Ghana: Three more examples from Algeria, from left to right, Tamanrasset, Tebessa, and Oran: Under tropical climes, the design is often quite open, as can be seen in those examples from Vanuatu and Kilimanjaro International from K-U-T: A little less boxy, Cotonou (Dahomey), Dakar (Sénégal), Basel-Mulhouse (France/Switzerland/Germany), or Mayotte: Sometimes we can find elements that take from the local architectural history, like these two examples from Morocco, in Agadir and Rabat: Or more fanciful roof structures, like in Tananarivo (Madagascar), Gago Coutinho Airport in Mozambique, or Kigali (Rwanda): Modern designs often move away from linear buildings, for instance the German hexagonal design (the Berlin Tegel example at right and a generic one in the middle) or the circular Terminal 1 at Paris-Roissy-de-Gaulle in France (where I have great memories of running in the slanted escalators that criss-cross above the central atrium area as a child): Some airports are shown on multiple stamps in different eras, for example the Djibouti airport before and after its remodeling in the early 1970s: and the Nouméa airport in New Caledonia, from the initial hangar in 1949 (in the background of the top issue) to its fourth incarnation in 2013: To finish, sometimes the airport itself is not the main topic of the stamp, but can still be clearly distinguished, such as in these stamps below: Other examples welcome, I'm curious!

Also missed in yesterday's pass, this 1949 issue from West Berlin showing the city's Tempelhof airport (a shining example of fascist architecture), and where the Berlin airlift took place. It closed in the early 2000s, when the German government had hopes to open the Berlin-Brandenburg airport soon (we're still waiting on that one!): Also exists as a brown 15pf issue in smaller format.

Before airplanes, there were Zeppelin airships, which needed only a large field and a few hangars, like shown in this block from Sao Tomé e Principe:

Block from Guinea-Bissau issued in 2012 featuring airports: Tokyo-Haneda (Japan), Seoul International (Korea), LAX (USA), and Carrascos (Uruguay). I have been through only three of those. It may be a while before I can visit the fourth!

Sultanate of Oman 18th November 1973 National Day Seeb International Airport The airport was virtually unchanged when I started travelling in to/out of Oman in the early 1980's. I went back in the 2010's and could not recognise the area.

South West Africa issued this J.G. Strijdom Airport stamp in 1977. The Windhoek terminal and aircraft are attractive and I'm very happy to have finally gotten this stamp. Scott: 406 A86
