Hello all. Little cover mystery. According to Postmaster information, Scott 898 was issued for the first time on September 7, 1940 in Albuquerque New Mexico. This cover is a first day of use in Fremont Ohio on that day. Any thoughts on either this cover's existence or the fact that it was postmarked at 4am?

Well, regarding the 4am and date, a possibility, but pure speculation. The clerk who put the current dates and time in the canceler made an error, i.e the time should have been 4pm and the date September 8.
Another possibility, again speculation, a clerk at the Fremont post office erroneously released the stamp for sale to the public a day early and make a mistake on the time, i.e. time should have been p.m. I doubt that a post office in a town as small as Fremont (14,700 in 1940) would have been open 24 hours, but its possible. Could have been that the post office had to make a dispatch near 4am and there was an employee on hand to make it, and, to create a "special" first-day cover for himself or a friend.
There is a another possibility, clearly against regulations, i.e., a favor cancel a day before regular release of the stamp. That pre-printed address on the envelope adds credence to this possibility. John Pump may have been a collector who serviced his own flight and first day covers.
All speculation, but your cover is a curiosity, for sure worth collecting.
