Before Christmas I bought another lot of post-classic/modern used stamps from Nigeria. I was able to fill in a couple more spaces in the 1965-66 Animals definitives set including the 1sh3p Crowned Crane and the 1£ Cape Buffalo. I was also able to upgrade a couple of stamps to better copies. I am still missing the 1 1/2p Splendid Sunbird and the 10sh Hippopotamus but I don't mind taking my time and buying more used lots when I come across them on eBay. The 1£ Cape Buffalo stamp was actually a bit of a disaster in this particular lot I purchased. It is Scott#197 and is the high value in terms of denomination and the used value in the 2016 Scott Catalogue is US $9.00. The stamp, when I received it had a layer of 2 strips of what looked like scotch tape across the face. It looks like it had been on the stamp long enough that it had stained the underlying stamp. Hopeless, right? Well, I sprayed some Pure Citrus on the face and the back and after 30 seconds or so, was able to take my tongs and gently slide them under the tape and lift the tape off the face of the stamp. I was also able to gently rub the face of the stamp to remove any remaining adhesive. I am pretty pleased with the results even though the stamp is still basically a space filler and has little to 0 value. It is pretty beat up but it still fills this space in my collection. This first image, with the tape on, I cropped from a scan of a stock page full of stamps I scanned a week or so ago so it is not as big.

A Scott listed minor variety that was in the lot is the 4p Leopards, Scott no. 189b. Scott 189b. which is the bottom stamp laid over the top of the normal version, Scott 189, has a wide 4, with a 5mm crossbar whereas the normal stamp on top has a 4.5mm crossbar. When you look at them, one on top of the other, it is pretty obvious. Also, the lavender outline is more evident on the normal 4 (top) vs. the wide 4 (bottom). The 2016 Scott catalog notes the wide 4 variety as having a $3.00 value vs. the normal stamp having a minimum value of .25c.

From 1969-1972, Nigeria printed redrawn varieties of the 1965 Animals definitives. The major difference was that the imprint of the printer was added at the bottom of the stamps, N.S.P. & M. Co. Ltd. The name of the designer carried over from the original designs in 1965 as Maurice Fievet. Below are Sc.nos. 295, 2p brt red & multi and Sc. 260, 3pm multi (issued in 1971). My question is, however, not with the stamps but with the Scott note at the bottom of this listing which states, ""Maurice Fievet" imprint on No. 259 exists in two lengths, 5mm and 5 1/2mm." Why would they simply not give a minor number listing for these differences? Also, when I measure the name of the designer on the 2p stamp below, at most is is 4.5 to 4.75mm and does not reach 5mm. I do not have the 5.5mm variety so I can't display that here but below are two "5mm" varieties laid on top of each other. Similarly, there is a note regarding Sc. 260 which states ""Maurice Fievet" imprint on No. 260 exists in two lengths, 5.5mm and 8.5mm." Why again would they simply not give the different stamps a minor number listing?

Thanks for the heads up about this variety! Yvert & Tellier does not mention it at all. They simply state three types, those with signature "Maurice Fievet" at the bottom left, those with signature "N.S.P. et M. Co. -- Maurice Fievet", and those with "Maurice Fievet" on the bottom right.

Neat neat neat! I just so happened to stumble across this set just last night, but in the Biafra overprint version.
I don't usually collect non-Francophone Africa, but I probably need to make an exception with this set.

With the last lot of Nigeria stamps I purchased on eBay I was able to complete this page. I still have a ways to go on the re-drawn stamps of 1969 but I am happy with this. Most of the high values are in good condition except for the Hippo which has some flaws that are not visible in the scan. I was also happy to be able to upgrade the 1£ Cape Buffalo stamp with a very good used copy. There are a few others on this page that could use some upgrades but for still a nice looking page.
