@ralphmcox, this is Japan, however, I think it might be best to rope in our Japan guru, Philatarium to help you with more proper id as I don't think this is listed in the Scott Catalog. This may be a revenue of some type.

Here is a very similar revenue stamp from Japan noted in the Forbin catalogue. The design is similar except that your stamp does not designate any type of denomination so I am guessing it is for some other purpose. The cancellation on your stamp is similar to a telegraph cancel.

I have also uploaded a copy of the image to another id source that Philatarium and I belong to and I will see if I can get any more information that I can pass along to you.

@ralphmcox, the best answer I can give you is that this is, "The cancel is from the pre-World War II Ministry of Trade and Industry, and it is a revenue stamp." While there are design differences between the the stamp I have identified in the Forbin catalogue and your stamp, in the end it is a Japanese tax revenue stamp. My sources do not indicate a value but it might be worth watching eBay listings to get a sense of it's possible sold value. I see a lot of Japanese revenue stamps being sold on that platform.

Japanese tax revenue (shunyu inshi). Not in Forbin because issued after WWI. The 2 main perforated series for this set that I am aware of are the... c1924 series: granite paper, watermarked lines (not sure if zig-zag or parallel straight lines) c1937 series: white paper, watermarked curved wavy lines The bottom two characters indicate 10 yen. There is also an imperforate series, but don't know what year. Someone with a Shimomura or Furuya should be able to give you more exact info.
