cara , I love this sheetlet! Especially interesting with the 250th anniversary of Beethoven's birth. I have a MNH copy. Interesting sidelights: 1) I have deduced the only reason the four composers shown below him either were born or died on a milestone anniversary year, but it's an odd group to put together with Beethoven, in my mind, as: 2) Haydn and Beethoven were not on the best of terms as Haydn was his first music teacher in Vienna and it did NOT go very well; 3) Louis Spohr, the least known of the five, loathed Beethoven, and believe it or not, his music was at least as popular as Beethoven's during their lifetimes. (Now we say Louis who?) 4) The only one of the 4 who had a favorable connection to Beethoven was Mendelssohn, who revived the playing of Beethoven's Violin Concerto (and conducted it) before he died prematurely.

Thank you bobstew617 these are very interesting sidelights. I must admit that I am not very well versed in the field of classical music and do not know the background. I am ashamed of it. But for that I also have my wife, she is my music expert. ... and in addition I now have the TSF. Thanks again! cara

Issued for the opening of the ( 3rd) "Beetvoven Halle" (concert hall) in Bonn (birthplace of Beethoven and capital of West-Germany), the souvenir sheet was issued on Sept.8th,1959. It happened in the hey-days of stamp-collecting in Germany and so the s.s. with a print of 4.771.000 was sold out in less than one week.
I was a scoolboy (Quartaner) on a gymnasium (grammar school) in 1959,almost 13 years of age.I had no information about newly issued stamps at the time, other than by hear-say from my comrades. The souvenir sheet was issued on the 8th of September.I learned about it on the 9th.However by then it was already sold out at the head-post-office of my town, and all other close by sub-post-offices (all gone today). However one of the clerks told us - we were in group of several boys -,that there was still one office in a suburb, what had stocks of the s.s. We went there and could buy five s.s. each. The above I asked to get cancelled and I still own it.
In mint n.h. condition the s.s. sell for about 50% of used (c.t.o.).For postally used there is no premium,as 100% were used philatelicly. The price went up immediately and reached about DM 100.- in mint at it´s peak. Now it can be found in special offers for less than € 10.- (DM 20.-)
The notes show an autograph of Beethoven´s 9th symphony, the chorus of the 4th set,"Ode an die Freude" (ode to joy), what was adopted as the anthem of Europe. bobstew617`remarks about Haydn-Beethoven are only half the truth.Other than Haydn,Beethoven was not an easy person to deal with. He was a genius and he knew that very well.As a genius,he could not accept that he learned from others,in that case Haydn. However many of his early works, namely the symphonies no.1 and no.2 and maybe no.8 show so clearly the influence of Haydn, that Beethoven´s remark:" I have learned nothing from him" (Haydn),is proved ad absurdum.
The first "Beethoven Halle" was built as a temporary site for a Beethoven-festival in 1845,directed by Franz Liszt. 1870 a permanent second hall was built, what was destroyed by an allied bomb-raid on Oct.18th,1944. The new 3rd "Beethoven Halle" was built at a cost of DM 9.5 millions. In 1996 it was overhauled and got some more smaller buildings added at a cost of DM 22.6 millions. After a long debate in 2009/10,wether to demolish the hall and build a complete new one,it was finally decided to modernize the hall. The projected costs of the works, what began in 2016 were € 60 mill. However the latest estimates run up to € 166 mill. or 320 mill.in DM currency. The reopening is scheduled for the year 2022.

salentin, I do agree most of the issues between Haydn and Beethoven were Beethoven's fault. He definitely had a problem with ANY authority figure. I do need to call out that Haydn was called on to teach the upstart from Bonn between his two stays in London. Two of his closest friends, including Wolfgang Mozart, had died not long before, and he was very much in the grieving process.

addenda:
Not a very popular souvenir sheet. But rather curious was the official order about the sheet. It said, that the intact s.s. was not valid for postage, but the torn out stamps only. However regardeless of the order, complete s.s. were tolerated on FDC and for other letters as well. I guess the s.s. exists on philatelic inspired letters only.

salentinInteresting comment that the souvenir sheet was not valid for postage but single stamps from the sheet were. When I was in UK,I often purchased the souvenir sheets and broke them down for postage. In some cases, the stamps on a souvenir sheet were different from the regular issues.A few times I had to convince the post office clerk that the stamps were valid. As far as I know, there is no order saying souvenir sheets are not valid for postage. Ja,Robert, usually this is true for souvenir sheets of Germany as well. They are of course valid for postage. This strange official order applied to the "Martyrs Sheet" only.

Scott mentions that in their catalogue. I always thought it was odd that the stamps were valid for postage, but not the souvenir sheet. Why? What was their reasoning?
Issued to honour the German resistance to the Nazis, 1943-45. Printed in sheet of eight, containing one each of Nos. 883-890, se-tenant. Size; 148x105mm. The stamps were valid; the sheet was not, though widely used. Values: mint $6; used $11.

Good question, Pete. I did not find anything about the reason. Only that it was an official decree.

On sheets like this one, I don't bother collecting the single as it is essentially the same thing. Only when they are different will I collect both.

The drawing on the field hockey stamp is wrong because the players are holding the sticks incorrectly. The drawing on the rowing stamp is correct, but unfortunately the picture shows the rowing team of GDR and not of FRG ... and this at the time of the cold war cara

I started this thread with souvenir sheet Michel # 2 of West-Germany. Now I show souvenir sheet Michel # 1 (# 103 - 105) on cover with correct postage of 80 Pfennige and "Notopfer Berlin" 2 Pfennige. Issued April 22, 1949. Unfortunately I do not know which colour . cara
