Post by BobT on Sept 3, 2021 17:12:24 GMT
I inherited these from my Great Aunt from VA. The US 1 and 2 are not pristine but are what they are. I need solutions to how to clean and remove stains/soiling. Thanks

Thanks for posting! I haven't done much with uS stamps since I was much younger. So hopefully others can chime in. For stamps from other countries, with exception of some of the stamps that have fugitive inks (water soluble) I typically soak is warm to hot water with a drop of clear dish soap, after which the stamp(s) whether just a cleaning, or removing hinges or from paper, are transferred to another bowl of warm to hot water only, after which they are placed on a towel to remove most of the water and then moved to drying books. mIf I am trying remove stains or the effects of time, I have some petri dishes I will place water with hydrogen peroxide, set aside with a timer, and then after a 20 - 30 minutes I will remove and place in a rinse bath. I have left stamps in much longer (meaning OK, I forgot about them) with few ill effects, however I did have one stamp (which I cannot remember what it was) that I reduced to a white stamp with a very clear and distinct postmark (I have wondered often what stamp it was so I don't subject another one to the H2O2 bath. I have also toyed with enzyme cleaners/detergents (and it was recommended to try pancreatin else on the forum) for remove some of the very stubborn gums (Austria and some of the early GB QV's come to mind)
As used stamps such as yours were originally on envelopes, they would seem to be soak-able in water (or surely someone by now would have loudly warned against!)

Yes these can be soaked in warm water. Not sure it is worth the effort though. The image resolution is so low, I can not assess any issues. I would only consider soaking if the back side has multiple layers of hinges or other gunk.

zipper thanks for posting your pics. I am highly suspicious of its authenticity. First the year date at the top of the letter has been altered. This year should coincide with the period of use of the 1847 issue. Second, note the handwritten “6” rate marking which coincided with the ca. 1851 rate reduction. Third, the distance between origination and destination, if posted in the 5c period is excessive and uncalled for. And lastly, the “stamp” just doesn’t look right. A clear scan of the “stamp” and postmark, as well as dateline, is essential for further comments. My initial conclusion is that this originally was a stampless folded letter. if you recently purchased this item was the price in line with similar examples? JeffS

I, too, am suspicious, but I liked the look of the cover. The seller is in Bavaria, Germany and there were other bidders. I won at $241.43 converted from GBP 205.
I have a loose #2, but it has only 3 margins. This has 4. At worst, I soak it off the cover and replace the one in my album.

Thanks, JeffS. I contacted the seller and it already shipped, but he said just send it back for a refund, no problem.
