I am working on laying out more pages fro the Croix Rouge (Red Cross) booklets. The 1952 booklet has the following on the back cover
adheres a la Croix Rouge vous qui, en utilisant les timbres poste a surtaxe l'aidez a servir
which Google translates to
members of the Red Cross you who, by using the surcharged postage stamps, help him to serve
is there perhaps a clearer translation into English- I'd like to be somewhat close
to me, this would work, but I have changed around the order off things
By using the surcharged stamps, you help the members of the Red Cross serve.
Thanks to all my French fluent stamp friends!

Hi, Stan ( stainlessb ): While I am not a native speaker like René ( renden ) or Xavier ( hrdoktorx ) or racatrien , I am a long-term student and speaker of French. I think your translation looks quite good and captures the meaning of the original inscription. Other opinions are always welcome, of course!
Edit: By the way, are the stamps actually surcharged, as philatelists would think of it, meaning an overprinted or changed denomination? Or is it just referred to it in the sense of a semi-postal stamp, with an added fee paid that is not good for the postage, but is a donation to the charity?

Thanks Chris ( Beryllium Guy ) yes they are semi-postal, but surtaxe is how they are referred to in the French language catalogues. the catalogues refer to overprinted values (or RF overprint) as surchargé

The text snippet you give is not quite grammatically correct, so seeing the full thing written would help.
If the original text is instead:
Adhérez a la Croix Rouge vous qui, en utilisant les timbres poste a surtaxe, l'aidez a servir
one could translate it at:
Join the Red Cross, you who, by using the overtaxed stamps, help it to serve

I knew I should have waited!

The awkwardness is actually is in the original. It is a rather old turn of phrase, and current French usage would not use it. Here's a modern example expressing the same sentiment. Note the usage of the more inclusive first person plural "Let us continue":

Seeing the recent posting of brightonpete's that can be seen here, I was reminded of a recent mailing that arrived in the postbox.
The envelope in question, posted from the United States of America destined for Portugal,
was delayed as it took a bit of a whirl-wind tour before reaching its destination,
If anyone has knowledge of what the backstamps say or mean, please do share...
Have fun and happy collecting!

Spent a few moments watching an American Philatelic Society's "Stamp Chat" with Dr. Jean Wang where she discusses Topical and Thematic Collecting, along with Exhibiting. As part of the presentation, I would learn that the larger of the two handstamps from the image in the previous post, denotes that the envelope has been disinfected. It was during COVID times, that China was disinfecting mail received from abroad and this enveloped has received its 'treatment'. For the smaller of the two handstamps and its significance, the mystery remains. Any interesting cover postmarked '21 JUN 2022'...
Have fun and happy collecting!!

Jean Wang, is an authority in thematic philately. Her collection on blood transfusion "Thé gift of life" is truly outstanding.

Indeed cursus , Dr. Wang is most knowledge and her recent Multi-Frame Grand & Large Gold awards from the Great American Stamp Show last year would suggest she does know a thing or two ;-)
Perhaps more importantly though, is her willingness to share that information given her numerous presentations and writings. It is from her and a recent email exchange, that I would learn of two Chinese handstamps shown on the cover in the thread above and their relationship to China disinfecting its mail during COVID times,
Beginning in late August 2021 handstamps were applied to regular letters,
In late January/early February 2022, a small label or handstamp was added, first appearing in Beijing and Jilin City.
The willingness of our fellow collectors to share, is what makes this a great hobby...
Have fun and happy collecting!!
