Between 1885 and 1895 the area of Bechuanaland south of the Molopo River formed a Crown colony known as British Bechuanaland before being annexed to the Cape Colony in 1895.
It should be noted that the short lived Stellaland Republic, with its single set of 4 postage stamps, was founded by the Boers in 1883 and annexed to British Bechuanaland in 1885.
British Bechuanaland never printed its own stamps, but instead relied on overprinting the stamps of other countries. It is not an easy country to collect as many of the stamps are scarce and expensive, and the reliance on overprints has led to a wide range of varieties as well forged overprints.
Here is the first part of my British Bechuanaland collection, unfortunately still in a stock book, I will eventually get to creating an album I try to collect both mint and used, but still have far too many holes and the two high value £1 and £5 used stamps have fiscal cancellations, while the £1 mint has a specimen overprint. Actually Scott does separate these as two entities but they do not separate the numbering. The issues overlap. From what I see the areas did not overlap. The British expanded control over a larger section with the initial section being annexed into South Africa
In Scott, British Bechuanaland's last issue was Scott No 42 issued in 1897 but then the Scott continues with the Protectorate issues with No. 43 in 1888. SG does something similar but they start the Bechuanaland group with Stellaland then restart numbering.
This nuance was news to me
