Hi- I've been slowly working through my various acquisitions and have a questions about these: I notice that these show up for both 1939 (Y&T 437, 438, 439) and 1940 (Y&T 462, 463, 464)- what's the difference between these? They seem to be identical and Y&T doesn't give a clue (at least what I could determine). Thanks in advance for any information.

Hi Oskar the stamps reprised in 1940 were re-valued
DeBussy 80c + 10c
de Balzac 1F + 10c
Bernard 2F50+ 25c
colors are pretty much the same (although my 1940 Bernard appears slightly 'brighter"

I can't even count the times I've missed changes in denomination, even in series that I've worked on several times and think I know pretty well. Of course, if I could count that high, I probably wouldn't miss so many .

I'm amazed at how often the French "recycled" stamp issues by re-valuation. Now to try and figure out the Marianne issues- "intense" Marianne vs "tired" Marianne....

Thank you for sharing these! I enjoy looking at the older French line graved stamps--so well done! And then I cannot resist seeing Mssr. Debussy on a stamp as he is one of my favorite composers.

Mission complete, I'm happy to say: The 1939 issue: The 1940 re-issue:
It's interesting that the Puvis de Chavanne stamp wasn't re-issued the same way as the other three.

it may have been that because it was the lowest denomination there was no need to reissue based on the values of the other three. Having died ( de Chavannes) in 1898 I wouldn't think there was anything scandalous or political since the 1939 issue.... but who knows

If only the US would put out a semipostal to support unemployed intellectuals...

The fact that these stamps even happened speaks well for France as a country.

If only the US would put out a semipostal to support unemployed intellectuals... I coulda been a contender.... It does speak well, though. I'm starting to do some research on French intellectuals, poets, artists, and such who weren't exactly real great guys but got on stamps anyway.

I often wondered about these, what made “intellectuals” more deserving of charity than any other unemployed category ?
How did one qualify? Did one register ?
I am currently an unemployed philosopher…..” sometimes I sits and thinks, some times I only sits.”
